Suffragette and Chess Player, Ellison Scotland Gibb

Post by Gerard Killoran » Fri Oct 09, 2015 4:05 pm

Having just been to see the new film Suffragette, I have created a blog post in honour of one of their number who was also a chessplayer. I think her life would have made a better movie.

I have now been able to confirm that Margaret Gibb, the axe-wielding sister of Ellison Gibb, was also a chess player. She took part in a Scottish Ladies Championship, a minor tournament at the British Championships and was once champion of Glasgow Ladies Chess Club.

I wonder if they played chess together with one of these?

This forum has shown that although some of our predecessors weren't as good chess players as most of us today, they often lived more interesting lives.
