I have 1:0 against Luke McShane. He was only 8 at the time and had just won the World Under 10 Championship at Duisburg. You have to catch them young to beat these future Grand Masters !

Could be. I'm rather hoping I bagged another one during last year!

The Rook is an important piece in chess, but can you name a minor English chess player and problemist whose middle name was Raven?

Great answer! But I'm sure it's wrong...

Sure Mickey also won Hitchen 1988, he was 244J. He played Julian Hodgson next round,(draw) after my game. Joint winners. So, yes rather over 200!

Nice try.

Coincidentally, our man (who hailed from Norwich) also had a surname which ended with a male bird.

Another clue, his initials were F. R. A.

A BMD search locates Frank Raven Adcock, born Swaffham, Norfolk 1870, died Norwich 1949.

There are 8 problems (6 #2, 2 #3) on the MESON database.

The picture with medals. Note a Combat gallantry medal, from the horrible war on the East front.
Before, he was a staff officer in Vienna. A highly intelligent man.

"H E Bird was not a minor player, at all."

He was a Myna Bird!

Here is a question with a genuine answer. It's from a WWII BCM.

Name the Chess player whose book shop was bombed in WWII on the same day as his house was bombed in a separate raid.

He repaired the house but the Germans came back and bombed it again.

Undeterred the chess player went to Bath. And yes the Germans sought him out and once again bombed him homeless.

----

An Easy One:

Name the famous Chess player who had a mountain named after him.
(the mountain in question is actually a 500 foot hill but 'Mount' was added to it.)

Good. Stumped you all.

The bombed player was a Mr Redway. see The December 1940 BCM pp 393-394

Mount Alekhine. See BCM December 1996 Quotes and Queries.
