Judy/Stella

Post by John Townsend » Sun Feb 28, 2016 10:35 am

I would like to read again an article in CHESS magazine written by Chris Ravilious, sadly recently departed, about Judy/Stella, the unidentified problemist. I believe the title included words similar to "Staunton's scarlet lady". Perhaps someone would kindly tell me the year and month of that issue of CHESS - probably 21st century, and perhaps about 2004.

Kind regards,

John Townsend

John - there is an article titled:
"Stella" (soubriquet of C19 problem composer) - Vol. 67 (2002/3) January p.42.

Presumably it's that one. Can check later if necessary.

Colin, it sounds like the one. If you could check later if the author was Chris Ravilious, that would be appreciated. Many thanks for your help.

Yes, authored by Chris Ravilious. It's a short, sub-headed passage within a larger article titled 'Really Great Britons'. Quite fortunate that the sub-section was separately indexed, but then Mr Ravilious penned that too!

Nice article actually. CR names and gives reasons for his choices of most outstanding (chess related) Britons.

In case anyone is overcome with suspense at this point, I can reveal they were ... Edith Baird, Douglas Betts, Captain WD Evans, Sir William Jones, Comins Mansfield, Tony Miles, HJR Murray, Howard Staunton, Judy/Stella and BH Wood.

CHESS, Jan 2003, pp.40-42.

Cordial thanks to Colin, and to Brian Denman, who also gave me a reference to that edition of CHESS. Now, how to get hold of a copy ...

John,

I have sent you a scanned copy of the article and also Chris's article about Howard Staunton. You will now have seen the email that I sent to you yesterday.
