Re: Blackpool 1944
Thanks for all the info, I have now got the annotated games in my "Hooper" database, which I will of course send to my distinguished colleague, John Saunders, when I've finished.
I first met David in 1968, when he was no longer a fair-haired young athlete! He was always very pleasant. His annotations are instructive and in some cases rather revealing.

Hooper seems like an interesting person - with or without bevy: http://www.chesshistory.com/winter/extra/hooper.html. Re Hooper's letter at the foot of the piece, in my ignorance, I hadn't clocked that Penrose was a Quaker - though there are certainly references to the fact.

In 2000, Caissa Editions published a memoir of David Hooper, edited by Kenneth Whyld. Just 100 copies. Also included the many tributes following his death. Good selection of photographs and drawings. Excellent photograph of the BCF team at the Helsinki Olympiad, 1952. Left to Right: Barden, Horne, Penrose, Hooper, Golombek, Milner-Barry.
In room 18 at St.Brides Institute, EC4, he recalls seeing Sultan Khan playing in a team match. Also in the room was Dr Emmanuel Lasker holding a conversation with van Meurs.
