Live Games + Illegal moves

Post by Geoff Chandler » Fri Jul 23, 2010 11:59 pm

Hi Giys

Really sorry if this has been covered - did a search of threads
but found nothing (if it's there post a link).

My question is this.

If a player makes an illegal move on one of these move recording boards
is the lad operating the board bound to tell the conroller?

(here I assumme the program will not allow the game to continue -
or does it not check for legality?).

Does he stay out of it and hopes either player notices the illegal move

Inform the controller.

Does nothing.

It's believed that the DGT software makes no attempt to check for legality. That's why you can get complete nonsense in the score if the players reset the pieces or (even worse) analyse positions using the game board.

The telepathy between the game and the man in the side room only works whilst the game in in play. When the game finishes, he would prefer you to freeze the final position.

Cheers Roger.

That clears that on up.

If he notices an illegal move. can he interfere with a game in progress and tell the controller?

By that I mean MUST he or does he lay quiet like a normal spectator.

Unless designated as an assistant arbiter, I wouldn't have thought he could do any more than try a subtle hint to the arbiter with a big A that the game is worthy of attention. Even that might be considered unsporting or interfering.

But there are numerous arbiters with a big A that read this site - opinions please!

Thanks again Roger.

I'll look in tomorrow to see if anyone else replies. Off to bed.

Perhaps they should make the lad in the box room a controllers assistant
for the duration of the tournament. Perhaps they do.

Hi Geoff,

If an illegal move is made the DGT boards will stop working, and stop recording the rest of the game. The DGT board operator would tell an arbiter if the players hadn't noticed. More commonly, the players self correct and the DGT board operator manually amends the game record so that it is legal and the board can continue working.

Thank Sean.

Clears that one up.

At the Scottish Championship (Won by Andrew Greet) I was wondering
around the finished boards and noticed the pieces still set up in their
final positions.

Thought did occur to me to play a few extra moves and swindle a win
from a totally lost game to see if it would be recorded.

Then I started thinking about illegal moves and wondered what
would happen. Yesterday another post on another site brought
this back to me.

I had to do one more Corner as I have been voted 'Scottish Player of the Year.'
There I figure out how the electronic things work.

This is the last one. I had to come back and say thank you.
It was The Corner that won the award.

So your question about illegal moves had nothing to do with this - "and 1...Qb4 2.Rh3 Qf1+ 3.Kh2 Be5+ 4.g3 Qf2+ is a perpetual." :)

Ha :)

It should be Qe1+ (I'm one letter out - call it a spelling mistake).
I'm pepping on f2 and f1 that's what I saw.

I often condemn computer use but I really should check my lines
with a box and then cut and paste in the moves.

The analysis is (ahem) usually correct, it's the notation that is wrong.

As this is the last one I'll correct it.....perhaps not.

Cheers.
