Interesting players can make any opening interesting.

Perhaps it's just that a player will find an opening "boring" if they don't understand it? Having had a break from chess for several years, I was quite amazed that the standard of opening theory has improved and this is probably due to the accessibility of databases/internet etc. I admit to not knowing whether to feel satisfied or depressed when I get to move 10-15 of mainline theory in one type of opening only to find my next move is truly awful.

One good thing for me in terms of not having a wide range of opening theory is that everything is interesting because, presumably in my case, "ignorance is bliss". How can that be boring? My games certainly aren't - they provide literally hours of laughter and comic entertainment!
