Re: Grading after first Fide tournament?
http://www.fide.com/fide/handbook.html? ... ew=article should be your first reference point! I think you need a published rating of 2200 for CM and 2300 for FM.
The ECF run a similar title scheme, based on your ECF grade;

Re: Grading after first Fide tournament?
You need a minimum of 9 games against players with international ratings to get a rating yourself, if you play in a Swiss or team event. All play alls can be structured so that just 4 out of 10 players have ratings. So you would need a minimum of 2 5 round tournaments to get a first published rating, probably 3 in practice.James Byrne wrote: Say for arguements sake I managed a rating performance of 2350 in my first tourny, how many more tournaments would I need to perform at this level to become a Fide Master? I know for IM and GM's it's 3 norms I think? Just wonder what it is for Fide Masters and Candidate Masters if anyone knows?
The CM title can be awarded for a rating of 2200 and 2300 for FM.
For IM you need a rating of 2400 and 2500 for GM. That's in addition to the three norms.
The English player Jonathan Hawkins made IM from a limited number of games. You can see how he did it at

Be wary though of assuming that blitz ratings translate into over the board standard. Many Blitz ratings are several hundred points higher than a player's OTB rating.

You may like to know that both e2e4Chess and CCF organise tournaments specifically designed to enable players to obtain FIDE ratings. There will also be such a tournament at the Big Slick International.

The only FIDE rated games I have played have been in the 4NCL. I played 7 FIDE rated players in 2009/10 and 4 in 2010/11. Is that enough to get a FIDE rating?

You have 4/7 from 2009/10 at a part-rating of 1968, as can be seen here.Phil Neatherway wrote:The only FIDE rated games I have played have been in the 4NCL. I played 7 FIDE rated players in 2009/10 and 4 in 2010/11. Is that enough to get a FIDE rating?
Your 4 games this season will be enough to get a rating.

This season's 4NCL will only be reported in time for the 1st July 2011 list, but 11 games will do it. If you play the final weekend against rated players, these will be included as well.Phil Neatherway wrote:The only FIDE rated games I have played have been in the 4NCL. I think for CM and FM you not only need to exceed 2200 and 2300 respectively, but also to have played something like 30 games, but I am too idle to look it up.

Peter, I think that was a long time ago, they are currently 70Euro for FM and 50Euro for CMPeter Turner wrote:+ sending the appropriate fee to FIDE to register your title . Now I feel very old!! Cannot keep up with inflation - memo to brain, "Must stop starting a sentence with, 'I remember when..' ". For the last time I'll say, "I remember when I filled my car it cost less than £5, and my first home cost £3,100 and the building society would not give a mortgage even though Gil & I were both teachers!! Ha, the good old days".
Respect, cheers Alan, all the very best.

FIDE dropped the 30 game rule a few years ago, I only assume they did this to get more money out of us, a bit like when they introduced the CM title, fortunately I got this on the cheap when it was introduced about 8 years ago (it only cost me £20)
I wouldn't recommend anybody applying for the CM title today, it gives you no benefits for reduced entry and it doesn't even account for title norms, though WFM does and these people are normally well over 100 points lower rated

Re: Grading after first Fide tournament?
No you have to have a published rating above 2300, to get a publish rating you have to have played at least 9 games, either in one tournament or through partial ratings (minimum of 3 games), there maybe other ways to get the rating through continental championships etc., though you would assume you are covered with the above anywayJames Byrne wrote:So just to check, an ungraded player can become a FM if they achieve a rating performance of 2300 or higher in a tournament? I think someone said that they need to have played 7 games as well.Alan Walton wrote:Kevin,Kevin Thurlow wrote:I think for CM and FM you not only need to exceed 2200 and 2300 respectively, but also to have played something like 30 games, but I am too idle to look it up.
