Hi Jack
The moral seems to be:
'Don't make backward Knight moves without looking at the forward ones first."
Obtuse Caro-Kann 3...h5

Re: Obtuse Caro-Kann 3...h5
I knew I was winning by that point (though the number of ways to win was a bit disconcerting). I was more annoyed that my 'brilliant' 22.Nc4 seems to have been refuted by 22...Qc2 (I'd only looked at 22...Qxa2 - a typical mistake to only consider the obvious captures). I was assuming that once my knight settles on d6 with gain of tempo, I would be winning, but couldn't work out what to do after 23.Nd6 Rc7 and went for another plan, which also had a flaw (23.Ne3 Qxa2 24.Nxd5 exd5). I haven't had a chance to look at it with an engine yet, but did I miss anything obvious?IM Jack Rudd wrote:Chris had at least four winning moves with that knight, in fact: 25.Nb6 and 25.Ne3 both pick up the rook. I'm not sure whether 25.Nc7 is winning as well.

As the loser of the game , i would like to add my own comment :
24 Nxd5 is a blunder met by another blunder Rc4 ?? instead the simple 24..exd5 just wins after 25 Rxd5 Re8 i dont see the win
i "forgot "that e x d5 closes the d file
and by the way the move 14 Qg4 ? 14..Nxe5 ! 15Qg7 Bd4 ! 16Kh1 Qf6 -+
...h5
As for ..h5 its very useful in the caro
i love the line
1e4 c6 2d4 d53 Nc3 dxe44 Nxe4 Nf6 5Ng3 h5 !! amongst others

move 16....I suppose I better get the queenside pieces out now I cannot move the knight again.
As Bob states NxN. move 24 dips a knight for a pawn.

Thanks for the comments, Bob. I should really have truncated the game score I posted here, as the point was more to give an example of ...h5 wreaking damage, but the rest of the game was so interesting I couldn't resist posting it.Bob Kane wrote:As the loser of the game , i would like to add my own comment :
