5 .. Ba5 in the Winawer French
Today's game Bacrot v Bauer in the French Championships went 1 e4 e6 2 d4 d5 3 Nc3 Bb4 4 e5 c5 5 a3 Ba5 6 b4 cd4 7 Nb5 and now rather than 7 .. Bc7, Black went 7 .. Bb6!?. Not a new move but my database stops in 2011. Are Ba5 Winawer players trying something different these days or is Christian Bauer just having a punt.

Bauer is well known for playing off beat openings. Play the Scandinavian and Play 1...b6 authored by the very same.
