Telegraph game

Post by Francis Fields » Wed Oct 08, 2014 2:14 pm

I looked at the game in yesterday's Daily Telegraph and would like to know if anyone thought that Rxc5 (instead of Re1) was better. Also was b6 (in this variation) forced?

I believe that this is the relevant part of the game in question -

N.B. The move 17.Re1 had been played before.

Horizon effects are always possible, but I'm getting the story that Rxc5 is necessary and that Re1 is a mistake because 17. .. c6 is good.

Yes, Roger, 17... c6! was played in the 3rd round of the Secondary Schools event this Sept.
It was also played in Matamoros Franco,C (2473)-Rohrmueller,U (2257) Politiken Cup 2002 1/2 in 33 moves.

In the junior game - between "two of England's most promising young players" - the next move was 18.Na3... and in the older game it was 18.Nxd4...

Edit: to add Black's rating.

I think I would prefer to play Re1. If the light-squared bishop takes the rook on a8, white will have too many holes in the position for my liking.

Well, MJ, if you don't play 17.Rxc5 you won't be playing Pb7-b6 any time soon because in answer to 17.Re1 c6! 18.Nxd4 Qb6 "wins material". If 18.Na3 f5! starts a K-side attack and "White's Q-side pieces cannot influence affairs on the other wing". (Quotes from Malcolm Pein's Daily Telegraph column)

Have a good day at the FIDE GP, Baku.
