Closed Sicilian with 6 Be3

Post by John Moore » Sun Nov 29, 2015 4:59 pm

Yet another strong player manages to find a blunder that has been known for donkeys years. Today in the Belgrade Trophy, we saw 1 e4 c5 2 Nc3 Nc6 3 g3 g6 4 Bg2 Bg7 5 d3 d6 6 Be3 e5 7 Nf3 Nge7 8 Qd2 Nd4 and now White found 9 Nd1 allowing 9 .. Bh3! This was Radisa Nikolic v Milan Vukic.

By the way Radisa is 2217 - so not at the top of the Nikolic list. Nonetheless!

That's pretty surprising. I lost a game to Tim Spanton when I was in my teens with this theme, colours reversed in a Botvinnik English. I've since seen the idea countless times, although White can still grovel on with 0-0.

I have added the diagram.

Glad you added that because I didn't know it and used to play that line.

I fell into the same trap against Peter Morton at Paignton last year. Not quite the same move order, but the same setup.

I've now found that game. A far more disastrous version of the same theme. 1.e4 e5. 2.Nf3 Nf6. 3.d3 Nc6. 4.Qe2 d6. 5.g3 Bg4. 6.h3 Nd4. I guess this sort of thing happens to most of us at times, especially when you've been playing chess for over 70 years ! ( I then played 7. Nxd4 Bxe2. 8.Nxe2 with Bishop and Knight for the Queen, but obviously not enough )

I suspect Black's first move was 1. .. c5 after which it's the rare Nimzowitsch line of the Sicilian rather than a Petroff.

No. It was a Petroff and I was trying to transpose to a K.I.A ( unfortunately, not the way Fischer played it !)

Barcza v Tal, Tallinn 1971, is another instructive version of this trap.

Nice finish. I guess you just don't expect the Bh3 in such a position.
