My video tutorials to learn Chess

Post by Simon Louchart » Tue Jan 03, 2017 9:00 pm

Hello,

I have been working for some years on an iPhone chess app called Chess Trainer, which is here to help people improving their Chess skills.
In parallel, I have started to create videos based on the app content, for those who do not have access to the app store.
The first videos explain the rules of Chess, they are perfect for complete beginners and explain how the pieces are moving:

the basics and how the King moves:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xX1og2DPyNk

how the Rook, the Bishop, and the Queen are moving:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orc5dEi7sgk

the specific case of the Knight:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pEVV_cAfaag

and finally, the pawn:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2nlTOgrzEg

you are free to use these videos in any context.
I'll update this post very soon with more advanced videos.

Now that you know how the pieces are moving, it is important to learn how they interact with friend and enemy pieces. That is the topic of these 2 new videos:

Interacting with friend pieces:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-EiZBQj89Q

Capturing other pieces:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYsNpOon1G4

I'll continue posting on this thread with other videos

Next: how to checkmate, which is the real goal of the game.

And 3 more videos to finish with the rules of Chess:

the first describes exactly how to checkmate your opponent:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eqWUfvKuzwk

then, the second one helps you with those 3 exotic moves: castling, capturing "en passant" and promoting a pawn:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmsWA_n2oRs

finally, the last one focuses on the draw, highlighting the subtleties of stalemate in particular:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJaJSGtbOyc

That's it with the rules, but there are more videos coming.

According to that great sage and wise person, Joshua Gibbs, unless your ECF grading is at least 150 then your lessons are likely to be of little or value to anyone. In fact, you are likely to be misleading children whatever you say or do.

(For the record: I do not subscribe to his nonsense)

Hello John,
I am slightly confused by your message: do you suggest my lessons are misleading, or maybe there is some irony that I am missing... (that's the issue with internet, no voice intonation to help me interpret).
I am happy to debate about the merits (or flaws ?) of my lessons, but I would certainly prefer if one bases his critics on the content, and not on generic principles.

But anyway, I will release more videos on basic notions (exchanges, basic checkmates, familiar tactical and mating patterns), so you will have more videos to evaluate and criticize :)

In your lessons on youtube you are covering too many points in too short a time.
That is on the basics.

@Ian: Thanks for the reference ! It helps to get the context. I'm afraid I am not qualified to teach the rules of the game to anyone then :)
@Nick: Point taken for the basics, it is true that explaining the rules is not the most fascinating part when teaching chess, even if I tried to spend enough time on each point. Normally the next videos should get more detailed

A small challenge for beginners: find all 7 checkmates in the following video:
https://youtu.be/E8eADb_Jlek

and next, find the 6 checkmates in this video:
