I reckon Giri needs either top 4 in the Rapid or top 2 in the Blitz at a very rough calculation
It would seem weird if a Candidates place was clinched with a performance at a faster time control

Yes, that is the true weirdness, which seems to have slipped through without anyone noticing. Traditional chess has evolved into a sort of triathlon.LawrenceCooper wrote: ↑Fri Dec 22, 2023 10:29 amAgreed, even though some of the title matches have been decided that way.Mick Norris wrote: ↑Fri Dec 22, 2023 9:19 amIt would seem weird if a Candidates place was clinched with a performance at a faster time control

It's the way the game is going I'm afraid, one of the reasons why Magnus has dropped out is because he wanted faster time controls with more games. Cricket has gone this way too, test cricket is being slowly squeezed out and is less popular than faster forms of the game, which bring in much more money.

Draw agreed, albeit with black having a big advantage.Mick Norris wrote: ↑Thu Dec 21, 2023 9:51 amHe plays white v Fedorchuk this afternoon, a win would take his rating above So; presumably he plays him tomorrow as black too, and will need to win that to avoid his rating dropping back below So

I may be wrong here, but a brief look at the cricinfo stats suggests that the 2010s featured more test cricket than any previous decade.

I disagree with the likes of Carlsen regarding chess, too.

It's frequently said by many that he's losing his interest in classical chess and prefers faster formats, they are also claiming that COVID and the rise on online tournaments is largely responsible for this. Caruana talks about this at length in his C-Squared podcasts. It is more entertaining, so I get it.It makes chess more marketable or something.Matt Mackenzie wrote: ↑Fri Dec 22, 2023 7:04 pmI disagree with the likes of Carlsen regarding chess, too.

It's probably also the modern obsession wth instant gratification - remember having to see TV serials at one episode a week? Now you stream it or watch it when you feel like it. A young person was horrified that I had about 900 chess books, "Nobody has books any more". And he's one of those who is fiddling with his phone, not paying attention when he's just asked you a question... The inability to concentrate is appalling.
Blitz chess is ok for fun, but you need at least a four-hour session for proper chess.

Is the tournament going to be rated in time to make a difference?
I saw on the FIDE rating website it was in the January tournament list

It's listed for rating on January 1, as far as I could see, but the Chartres event has been deleted, suggesting that Firo may need 7/7 at Rouen and to meet and defeat all three 2400+ players.
