Thanks. Very impressive win. The f4, e5, d6 sequence (moved 18-20) really worked well there (does that sort of manoevre have a name?). The follow-up of 21.f5 was good as well. Is this a known tactic, or is it all new? (I have seen games where the advanced d6 pawn disrupts Black's position, but not this specific example before.) Efficient finish as well.

EDIT: Sadly, our hero lost in round 2 (to GM Evgeny Zanan), but has a third titled payer in a row to play in the shape of IM Stefan Tadic. Round 2 was a bit of a bloodbath for the ENG players, with 8 losses and 2 draws! Daniel Fernandez leads the way on 1.5/2. (David Fitzsimmons flying the flag for Ireland.)

It reminded me a bit of the idea in Penrose-Tal from the 1960 Olympiad.

Vasyl Ivanchuk and Boris Gelfand are among the almost 500 participants in the European Individual Chess Championship that kicked off in Vrnjacka Banja, Serbia on Friday. Russian players were still eligible to take part before the switch to Asia comes into effect, but Alexandr Predke represents Serbia after he and Alexandra Kosteniuk were among the first to switch to another European federation.

The highlight so far has been a major upset in the opening round when the Warwickshire amateur Tristan Cox, a chess veteran at 39, defeated the grandmaster and four-time Ukraine champion Valeriy Neverov.
