Mindsports GM Super Swiss Open

Post by Dragoljub Sudar » Tue Sep 19, 2023 6:47 pm

In the final round Ankush's GM opponent defaulted.
Was Ankush on course to get a norm and did this default deprive him of the chance of getting it?
If so that seems pretty crap to me, considering how hard people try to get these norms.
Has this sort of thing happened before and was the affected player given his norm anyway?
Unless his opponent fell ill or was forced to withdraw for another legitimate reason, can FIDE impose some form of sanction on him, like a ban for a period of time?

How do you define "ill" or other "legitimate reason"?

Main thread here: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=13680

Includes links to the results.

(The final round 'GM' opponent for Ankush was in fact IM Graeme Buckley.)

Ankush's TPR was 2422 going into that game, so he probably needed a win. Had he had a 2450 TPR going into that round, there probably would have been a case for arguing for the norm's being awarded.

(Congratulations to him anyway, mind: the 30-point gain he made means he can claim his FM title.)

Apologies. For some reason I didn't see the other one. Feel free to merge them.

He had passed 2300 in the British (after round 2 and 4) but a published rating would make the claim easier.

Has this sort of thing happened before...?
It'd be surprising if it hadn't. Here's an example from only a month ago where the player needed a win in the last round for an IM norm. The defaulter came in for a lot of criticism on Twitter.
