Pairings/Results
Round 11 on 2023/11/05 at 1400
Bo. No. Name Rtg Pts. Result Pts. Name Rtg No.
1 16 GM Erigaisi, Arjun 2712 7 7½ GM Nakamura, Hikaru 2780 2
2 15 GM Vidit, Santosh Gujrathi 2716 7½ 7 GM Predke, Alexandr 2656 47
3 4 GM Giri, Anish 2760 6½ 7½ GM Esipenko, Andrey 2683 32

51 112 IM Royal, Shreyas 2407 4 4 GM Wagner, Dennis 2589 91 (so Shreyas needs a win)
It seems a tad unfortunate that the above summary goes down to board five for the women but stops at board four for the men, thus omitting the excellent 6.5/10 unbeaten 2752 performance of the black player on board five.

If tomorrow goes well for that player, he would probably end up in the top six of this elite tournament, which ought to be something for the fortum to celebrate.

As a reminder of how strong Vitiugov (England's new number 1) is, he was ranked 17 in the starting field, is currently positioned 11th, and is 'only' gaining 5.5 rating points with a performance of 2752. The top 6 are all currently performing at 2800+. Fingers crossed that Vitiugov will do well against Maghsoodloo in the final round.

(And I do kind of want to see what sort of video Hikaru will do if he wins the event!)

Hi Chris,

The Nakamura interview on chess24 after the Caruana game is very good.

For the rather obvious reason that those are the only boards where Candidates places are at stake. I'm also very happy with how Shreyas has performed but including the top 51 boards seemed excessive.

Vidit must assume that Esipenko will achieve a draw and have a better tiebreak. So he needs to play for a win; luckily he is facing an aggressive opponent who will surely be playing all out for a win himself. So, sit tight and wait for his opponent to take the risk?

And hello again Chris,

Re the Sargissian-Svane position you posted. I'm wondering if White played 58.Qd7+ intending to swap Queens only to realise after 58...Kc3

There is (after Rxd1) a Rd2+ Rd1+ perpetual there. Or is that just me typically playing a move and thinking about what I have done afterwards. TBH in the heat of battle with a clock ticking I would have played a Queen check intending to swap Queens.

That is exactly what happened Geoff, White played one of the two obvious Queen checks when the winning move is the knight check on e6.

Possible the tactic of the black rook taking the knight on e6 might have put White off but then White switches plan and goes back to the queen check to win the now unprotected newly promoted Queen on d1.

White actually missed some more winning chances later and the draw was agreed in a strange position so not sure what happened there.

Giri has beaten Esipenko which makes things interesting.

And Shreyas is an exchange up for one pawn but it is a strong one, so looks difficult.

Looks like it will be Vidit who gets the Candidates spot!

Yes, wins the tournament outright with a last round win and Hikaru is second. Both qualify.

Vaishali wins the women's event but a last round draw means she has to wait a little longer to complete the 2500 rating requirement to add to her three GM norms. Anna Muzychuk is second but already qualified. I'm not sure if Tan has the second Candidates place ahead of Munguntuul on tie-break yet.

Isn't that what the Chessbase article said?

It's been a long weekend, mainly thanks to Northern Trains

Oh dear! It's still two as far as I know. "Each tournament grants two spots in the next edition of the Candidates." according to Chessbase. I think there are three spots in the women's grand prix though so that may be what you were thinking of.
