A different Scot, Alan Tate, appears to have obtained an IM norm with 6/9 and a performance of 2451. I am not sure about this, he faced 4 GMs, 2 IMs and 3 rather lower ranked opponents.

I think he's done it comfortably - 2467 performance after uplifting his weakest opponent to 2050. Very impressive and well deserved because aside from the three weaker opponents he had to score 3/6 against average of 2500! Including a win in the last round against a 2489.Andy McCulloch wrote:A different Scot, Alan Tate, appears to have obtained an IM norm with 6/9 and a performance of 2451. Good evening
Not had chance to be online since my last post, just arrived home from Cappelle. Can confirm that Alan did achieve an IM norm, I spoke with him at the prize giving and have seen the certificate. His tournament perf was 2451 on the final crosstable but Richard could well be correct about the upgrade of the lowest rated player.
Disappointing last round for the youngsters but all achieved a + performance. Sarah +3, Sam +7, Lateefah +16

looking on alan tate's fide rating results of late, his results seem a little dubious to say the least.

Re: Capelle La Grande International Open 26th Feb - 5th Marc
It's extremely dangerous to jump to conclusions when a player exhibits very variable results. In some cases it may be due to malpractice, but in other instances a player is totally honest but highly inconsistent. I have not the slightest doubt that Alan Tate is in the latter category.
Of course that makes it all the more difficult to take action when malpractice is suspected. Hence arbiters tend towards the caution for which I and others have been criticised in previous threads.

Right so hes lost to Quillan and Neil McDonald only? How is this a monster inconsistancy?
He has some solid players he drew with , Like Mcgowan had a good tourn and Milnes is aging but use to be very good 20 years ago, I don't really see this as a dubious bloody tourn, just one with a bit below par and a tough draw for points.

Re: Capelle La Grande International Open 26th Feb - 5th Marc
Have to agree with Ben on this one, he had one draw against a 1858 in round 1 which on paper is the only "bad" result
Other draws against 2100s can happen, these players aren't muppets, and losing to McDonald and Quillan cannot be regarded as shocks
I personally think it is disgraceful for somebody to comment on performance like the way David has done, if anything it looks like the London tournament was just a tournament to forget, and suddenly in Alan's next tournament in Cappelle he achieve another norm (Well done by the way)

Re: Capelle La Grande International Open 26th Feb - 5th Marc
There are numerous examples of players performing better against higher than lower opposition. You could try comparing Simon William's results in winning the London Chess Classic Open and his results in Divisions 2 and 3 of the 4NCL. I've also got used over the years to being asked if I'm really an IM by people who have seen me play league chess
