International Round-up 28/2/11

e2e4 Brighton International Congress 23rd - 27th February 2011
http://www.e2e4.org.uk/international/20 ... /index.htm

Congratulations to 16-year-old Yang-Fan Zhou who scored a magnificent 9/9 and his 2nd IM norm with two rounds to spare in the Masters A section. His tournament performance rating was 3038 and he gained 53 rating points. After starting with 6/6 he then proceeded to beat GMs Alexander Cherniaev and Keith Arkell before finishing with a win against IM Jack Rudd in the last round.

There were other notable performances from juniors, Jude Lenier performed at 2302 gaining 45 rating points in the Masters A and beat GM Alexander Cherniaev, Isaac Craft won the Challengers C section with 6.5/8 performing at 2253 and gaining 100 rating points (his k factor is still 25 I believe). Yang-Fan’s younger brother, Yang-Jian started with 8 wins in the Major H section before a last round loss meant he had to settle for 1st= and 8/9 but this was still a great result to announce his arrival on the international scene. Ravi Haria and Amy Hoare also had good results in the challengers sections and both gained valuable rating points.

The list of winners were as follows:

Masters A: Yang-Fan Zhou 9/9 (IM norm with two rounds to spare)

Masters B: Danny Gormally 8/9

Challengers C: Isaac Craft 6.5/8 + 1 bye

Challengers D: Michael Prizant 6.5/9

Major E: Kevin Millward 7/8 + 1 bye

Major F: Stephen Prior 7.5/9

Major G: Mustapha Othman 8.5, Anna Charpidou 8

Major H: Yang-Jian Zhou Niall Doran 8

Congratulations to Gawain Jones who won the Masters section with 5/6 including wins against Grandmasters Nigel Short and Alex Baburin, both in Alekhine Four Pawn Attacks. He won a rook ending against Nigel and then beat Baburin with a kingside attack in round 6. Ryan Rhys Griffiths and Tony Kosten were second equal with 4.5/6 and 4th was shared between Alex Baburin, Lawrence Cooper, Nigel Short and Simon Williams.

Awesome play by Yang-Fan. For the record I managed to score 7.5 from my other 8, but was downed by some classy endgame play from the 16 year old.

Obviously FIDE's arbitrary +800 for 100% scores can overstate a performance, but does anybody know yet whether his 3038 was a British record,or where it ranks in the all time worldwide list?

We have yet to find a better TPR over 9 games anywhere in the world. It appears to beat Carlsens 3002 at Nanjing.

I think we can safely say that he has satisfied the 2400+ rating requirement for the title of IM!

On the contrary, it would be slightly surprising if he had. Unless he's got some other outstanding rated games other than the 4NCL he's probably running at about 2385.

He's gaining 10.5 from the 4NCL and 52.65 from Brighton so add that to 2323 and you get 2386 so Richard is much closer to being correct. However, I suspect he will play at least one or two rated tournaments before the 4NCL is rated in July so for now it's probably safer to say he'll be 2376 in May if he plays no further games in this rating period (which Is unlikely) but he currently has 10.5 due in July depending on how he performs in rounds 7-11.

Yang Fan is indeed running at 2385. He does not need to be published over 2400, simply he needs to get over 2400 in live rating terms. So if he could gain 15 points at Uxbridge in three weeks time for example, that would do it.

Of course, there is also the small matter of needing a third IM norm.

Can he achieve an IM norm in the 4NCL?

If he plays well enough. He has a TPR of 2470 from 4 games so he has a decent chance.
