European Individual Chess Championship Aix les Bains France 21 March - 3 April

The final scores were as follows: Luke McShane 7.5/11, Gawain Jones 7, Stuart Conquest, Jovanka Houska & Peter Wells 6, Glenn Flear and Matthew Webb 5 & Terry Chapman 4.5. Luke had a 2684 performance, Gawain 2653 (including a last round win against David Navara rated 2722), Peter 2535 and Jovanka 2491. There were twenty-three qualifying places for the World Cup and despite a last round loss Luke claimed one of the places. He actually finished 24th on tie-break but some of the players above him had already qualified.

Lorin D’Costa is playing in the GM tournament and Isaac Sanders is in the FM A Tournament. Lorin requires 7/9 for a GM norm. After three rounds Lorin is on 1.5 and Isaac is on 2.

Krzysztof Belzo of Jersey won with 5/6 ahead of Louis Jonault, Toby Brookfield and Christopher Archer-Lock who all scored 4.
Bad Woerishofen Chess Festival 24th March-1st April 2011
In the Seniors event Steve Berry came second with a score of 7.5/9, David Guttridge scored 4.5, Alan Collins 4/9 and Ray Kearsley 3/9. A total of 128 played..
Tim Spanton played in the Open which had 198 players and finished with 5/9.

Perhaps (see another thread) the presumed need to supply your own chess equipment is a disincentive.

I play Bunratty every year and have played most of the other Irish tournaments once. I prefer Bunratty (and Kilkenny) because the majority of players stay at the venue and it makes for a much better atmosphere. At events in Dublin for example the majority of players commute and this also seemed true in Cork.
