How many under 20? makes the point in sharper focus.

England definitely needs more good young players. Of that under 20 list there's only one who's shown real 'promise' so far...

I think I must be looking at the wrong list - true they may not all become world champions, but if you think there is only 1 player on that link that will become a GM, I think you are mistaken. Would the real promise for example be the one thats about to become and IM or maybe the one that finished 11 and then 12th in the European youth championships etc....

You clearly don't know much about Matthew Wadsworth, Ravi Haria, Isaac Sanders, Tarun Malhotra, Anna Wang, Amy Hoare, Marcus Harvey, Peter Williams, James Holland, Brandon Clarke and I could name many more. We have lots of very talented young players but are sadly unable to offer them as many opportunities in terms of playing tournaments, coaching and financial support that I would like.

I haven't got as much time to geek up on chess as I used to.... but of that list I'd say one has a reasonable chance of being a GM, of the others I'd say most have less than 50% chance- Peter Williams is the only one who might make it based on results so far. That's what I meant by 'promise' although that's not as far as 'world beating talent' like Adams or Short had.

Harsh, but English chess does need to have a long hard look at itself in the way it attracts young players.

I actually made that other comment before reading Mr Shepherd's lol. Yep, by 'promise' I meant being a GM which in today's chess world means 'good player'- not enough to make a good living though unless you're 2650 or over! I'd put money on any on that list apart from Williams and Zhou not making it to GM- at the very least not until they're in their 30s unless the GM title is watered down EVEN more!!

Half of that list are U13, and are far more likely to become GMs than Peter Williams IMO. Not quite sure what "results" you are referring to.

However 50% chance is setting the bar quite high it seems to me. After all, if you suggest the average chance is 15% (to pluck an alternative figure out of mid air) that still leaves a couple of them becoming GMs!

And you don't need to be a "World beater like Adams or Short" to become a GM these days.

Last geeky post then bed.

Let's have a look at the young players in China...

http://ratings.fide.com/topfed.phtml?ina=1&country=CHN

Quite a bit of promise there.

It's quite simple what English chess needs to do.

They need to take the young chess players away from their homes, and hot house them! That's the 21st century way ;)

Never will happen, that's why countries like Ukraine and China will have a lot more good young players in future.

We're doing well in poker though! I think some smart kids might just take a look at the young British pros making millions and make a calculated decision on which brings more social status......

Not convinced that quoting a country with 3 billion people but only 100 rated over 2150 really makes your point, but there we are...

I suppose it does make the point about their hothousing their best players. I am not sure whether Mr Howitt is serious about suggesting that we do the same. I certainly find it difficult to take a number of his posts, including those on this thread, very seriously.

Perhaps Mark should've given the link to Dutch top 100. Population just over 16M.
http://ratings.fide.com/topfed.phtml?ina=1&country=NED

I agree his posts probably shouldn't be taken too seriously. It would certainly be nice if some of our strong juniors became GMs but most will probably end up doing other things, which is fine.

Which country would that be? China has a population of 1.3 billion people. To say they had no 'chess culture' thirty years ago I think they've made quite big strides.... and a look at the Ukranian list, with a population of less than England, would also make interesting reading...
