Congratulations to Grandmaster Keith Arkell who was joint winner with Igor Rausis of the strongest e2e4 open to date which included 5 grandmasters and three international masters. Keith had a 2615 performance and drew with Peter Wells in round 4 before beating Alexander Cherniaev in the final round to share first. Rausis beat Wells in the last round whilst the board 1 game between Simon Williams and Alex Longson ended in a draw which meant those two shared 3rd on 4/5 with Colin Crouch and David Haydon.

Gawain Jones won the Open A section on tiebreak at the XXIII Citta di Lucca Festival with 4/5. Close.

He got back in the small hours of the morning yesterday and was on a flight to South Africa for the Commonwealth Championship by mid-afternoon. Commitment.

And very lucky that the tie-break was Bucholz, and that after losing to him, his 1954-rated rd.1 opponent had a storming tournament, finishing in 9th place on 3.5, to help him along. By any other measure, Efimov ought really to have won, being the only one of the GMs to play all the other three, yet still finishing with 4 points.

Not taking anything away from Gawain, but Bucholz, particularly over so short a tournament as 5 rounds, is a bit of a randomizer to say the least! ARO would be fairer, though you probably have to drop one result to account for possibly playing an unrated. In determining winners, it's probably good enough - maybe a bit harder when you get down into the category prizes.

A relatively unusual event for the Italians. A weekend tournament, whatever next !

I wondered how they handled move rates and round times.

I found this
http://vesus.org/uploaded_reg/xxiiideg- ... -06-17.pdf

It appears they started round 1 at a nominal 3.30pm on the Friday with arrival expected by 2.30pm The Saturday and Sunday rounds were at 9 am and 3 pm. Move rates were 90 30.

I doubt if those start times would be very popular with e2e4 attendees, even if finishing most games by 1pm would allow time for a leisurely lunch.

Thanks for providing the info and link. Are the games available? The only reason I ask is that it could have influenced Gawain's result in the last round knowing he would win on tie-break as pairing wise at least it looks like a very winnable pairing if needed. On the other hand it may have had no bearing, just curious.

The FIDE-rated Yeovil Congress is this weekend coming. The current top seed is FM Paul Cooksey.

He said he was completely winning vs the 2200 FM in Round 5, and was fortunate that nobody overtook him. The trophy's on the coffee table in front of me now - it's very impressive for a weekender!

Short, Jones and one other on 8.5/10 at the start of today's final round in the Commonwealth Open.

Round 11 pairings Short (8.5) v Lafuente (8.5); Jones (8.5) v Gupta (8).

Short v Lafuente (currently live on TWIC) has opened 1 e4 c6 2 Nf3 d5 3 Nc3 Bg4 4 h3 Bxf3 5 Qxf3 e6 6 Be2 Nf6 7 0-0 Bd6 8 Bd1!? Nbd7 9 d3 0-0 10 Nb1!?

The new Short anti-Caro?

Adams on 4/4 in the World Open beating Ehlvest in round 4; next opponent van Wely who has just beaten Kamsky.

Later

Gawain has blasted Gupta off the board by a fine tactical attack, giving up first a pawn then the exchange before forcing mate or win of the queen. A game well worth playing over (you can find it on TWIC).

Nigel is slightly worse, though only 20 moves played and mutual time pressure looms. At the moment, Gawain is poised to become Commonwealth champion.

Later still: Not for the first time the live coverage has broken down on some games, one of them Nigel's, which remains frozen at move 20.

Nigel now showing 1-0 though no more moves shown.

So Gawain and Nigel will share first on 9.5/11, Nigel was a fraction ahead on tiebreak with one round to go.

An excellent English success!

TWIC are reporting that Gawain Jones came first on tie-break:

That is indeed excellent news.

Adams is now the sole leader in the World Open with 6/7, half a point ahead of van Wely, Kamsky, Harikrishna and Ehlvest. Two rounds left.

While I am cruising, very slowly, through the U1800 section of the World Open. 2 wins and 6 draws, hence 5/8 with one round remaining. :|
