Anand - Gelfand match

Post by Paul Cooksey » Sun Jul 03, 2011 10:06 am

An encouraging story in Leonard Barden's Guardian column:

Maybe there is some luck involved, if a wealthy individual has a personal connection to Gelfand. But good to see sponsor interest, there was some idle discussion on ICC about whether a Gelfand match would be attractive enough to go ahead. He deserves his shot.

This was mentioned on the Chess Vibes website on 28th June.

Perhaps I'm as paranoid as a Russian is supposed to be. This may be only part of the explanation.

Ilyumzhinov still appears to be in good odour at the Kremlin. Indeed, in the circumstances, only a mad dog would bite so good a man.

The sponsorship could be a reward for his trip to Tripoli.

For further background there is this and that to read.

Considerable irony in that, given the controversy around Gelfand's participation in the 2004 world cup.
