The link to the World Open website is currently broken, which is presumably why Loz's report above omits the final round 9 results. TWIC doesn't help either but I tracked them down on www.2700chess.com which is very up to date. This even has the games and shows that both Adams and Kamsky drew quickly in round 9, so they and possibly one or two others tied first on 7/9. Still unknown is what happened in the blitz playoff for the World Open title.

The 39th World Open took place in Philadelphia June 28th-July 4th, 2011. Gata Kamsky beat Michael Adams in a final 5-minute vs 3-minute Armageddon game to take the title after both players finished on 7/9 following quick final round draws.

5 minutes v 3 minutes Armageddon? If correctly stated, that's not normal and a big advantage for White.

The game is on the TWIC link I gave above - would be interesting to know how colours were chosen

I have seen armageddon colours decided by asking each player how long they want with black. Whomever submits the lowest bid plays black with the amount of time they picked. I think it's quite an elegant solution.

"Grandmasters Gata Kamsky and Michael Adams won the Open Section with 7/9 with Kamsky claiming the 2011 World Open Champion title by virtue of winning a 5-minute vs 3-minute Armageddon game between the current US & British Champions. Adams, having the better tie-breaks, chose the black pieces, 3-minutes and draw odds but was unable to hold against a determined Kamsky."

I'll round the event up next week, along with Steve Barrett and Alexander Hardwick's final scores.
