Lawrence,

Here is a tournament myself and David Spence are playing in October, normally there are a couple of other English players

Quite good prize money for an amateur tournament (U2300, no GM/IM allowed)

Let's hope so as he is currently destroying Smeets in great style for 8.5/10 and around a circa 2750 result.

I never really understood why he chose to give up professional chess just as he was looking likely to become a permanent top 10 player.

It's interesting to speculate how much of a difference it makes to spend your 20s and early 30s putting some money in the bank and pursuing other interests, and then returning to chess, as opposed to playing chess at the top level from an early age and sticking with it until your early/late 40s (e.g. Gelfand and Anand). There probably is a difference, but how much is it really, and how much in terms of ELO points and how much is due to innate talent and how much due to the experience gained, and other factors? Is making a comeback easier in the age of computers and large amounts of opening theory, or not? Also, compare and contrast with the amateur/professional status of chess in the 19th century and early 20th century (using Staunton, Steinitz, Lasker and Euwe as examples). Discuss.
