I'm surprised it says 'Captain: To be confirmed' for the Men's team. I think you'd be the ideal person for that role, Loz.

He would be good in that role, but I think he's holding off on confirming it until after the ECF board elections, just in case he isn't re-elected.

But that would clearly be ridiculous if he isn't! He has been amazing in the role. Again we have got a strong team out and that is thanks to Loz and his hard work in obtaining funding and supporting our players throughout the year.

That would make very little sense to me. For a start, he isn't opposed at the elections. But moreover, even if he were, accepting the role has nothing to do with elections. Captains have, I believe, normally been chosen by the selection commitee along with the players, so unless that has changed (and I hope that it hasn't) there is no question of conflicts - Loz does not have the power to select himself as captain, and so, if he were appointed and were then opposed and deposed at the election, there would be no reason why the committee's decision to appoint him as captain should be a problem for the successor, any more than the selction of any of the players.

I don't know why the role is currently vacant, but would guess that either Loz has been offered it but is trying to evoke interest in a stronger player who would more likely be able to assist with opening preparation, or to similar effect, the committe is looking for someone else, and is allowing time to pass because it is understood that Loz would be able to step into the breach if required. I would guess that Loz will be going anyway, as head of delegation.

If there is serious money available, there would be no reason not to want to appoint a very experienced GM and captain from abroad.

A few teams with some decent players missing, so hopefully England will do well.

Thanks for that. Maybe someone will start a new thread for the actual games and results. Best of luck to all the England players in both competitions. Hope the eurozone crisis doesn't affect things too much (not that it should, but it must be "interesting" times over there right now).

England Womens match not being broadcast (http://euro2011.chessdom.com/etcc-2011- ... n-section/), unless I'm missing something?

Mens team looking very good on all boards imo.
