Congratulations to Matthew Sadler who won his second successive international open. He scored 8/9 with a 2849 performance. Jovanka Houska finished on 4.5.

Gawain Jones scored 3.5/4 on top board for Matar against an average of 2542 giving him a performance of 2878 for the weekend. Simon Williams scored 1.5/4 on boards one and two for Hellir A and lost to Gawain in round one.

Nigel Short v Garry Kasparov Blitz Match Leuven Belgium 9th October 2011

An entertaining eight game blitz match ended in victory for Kasparov by 4.5-3.5. After three draws Kasparov took a two point lead by winning games four and five before Short levelled by winning games six and seven. Kasparov then convincingly won the final game with black in a Two Knights Defence to win the match.

Alex Longson won the FIDE rated open with 5/5, beating grandmasters Keith Arkell and Mark Hebden in the last two rounds. Peter Wells finished second with 4.5 and George O’Toole and John Chernoff (USA) finished on 4.

Twelve year old Ananthanaravanan Balaji won the FIDE rated major with 4.5/5, half ahead of Ali Golem, Robert Kane & Stephen Prior.
