Now the January 2012 ratings are out, we have the qualifiers as follows;

1 - Loser of the Anand-Gelfand match

2 - World cup qualifiers - Svidler, Grischuk and Ivanchuk

3 - Qualified by rating - Carlsen, Aronian and Kramnik

4 - Nominee of hosts - needs to be at least 2700 in this list

Reserves by rating in order - Karjakin, Topalov, Nakamura

The Anand-Gelfand match is to be played in 2012, presumably the next match will be 2014, with the Candidates to be played in 2013?
It seems a bit early for the players qualifying by rating to be determined.
My money is on a change of system before then anyway.

"The Candidates Tournament to determine the challenger for the 2013 World Chess Championship Match shall be organised in the second half of 2012 and represent an integral part of the World Chess Championship regulations for the cycle 2011-2013. Eight (8) players will participate in the Candidates Tournament and the winner qualifies for the World Chess Championship Match in 2013"

Thanks. I can't argue with the regulations, it just seems a year early. I had assumed the next match would be two years after the 2012 match. It means Anand will have to defend again in 2013, having already defended the title in 2012, or Gelfand will have to defend in 2013 after just one year. This cycle is '2011-2013', ie World Cup in 2011, Candidates in 2012, Match in 2013; presumably the next cycle will be 2013-2015, and a more balanced cycle will emerge.

It might have been fitting to have held the 2012 Candidates event in Curaçao and then again in 2062.

Along similar lines to the 1962 event would have produced a worthy challenger, surely?

After the allegations about 1962, I think it would be hard to find a more inappropriate venue although Kirsan might well try

As Kramnik said, London would be a good choice and allow Mickey Adams to play, but it may be that Russia will bid again

Though re-reading this thread is a reminder of how the delays and the switch to a monthly FIDE rating list has left some of the current best players in the world by rating stranded outside the qualifications places. Maybe next time things will be kept to schedule.
