What an amazing Tournament?

Post by Matthew Turner » Wed May 23, 2012 11:40 am

I have been looking for a foreign tournament in August without much sucess - any ideas welcomed, but I just came across this today.

It has only just appeared on the FIDE site but under the patronage of Silvio Danailov there is 50,000Euro of prize money. Not much time for people to organize going (it is 4th-12th June), but it looks like cracking good value. A single room half-board for the eight days is Euro350 and that includes the entry fee!

Hi The Heraklion-Gazi tournament, Crete, 4.08.12 to 11.08.12, is one we would recommend. Conditions for GMs above 2500, first five only we think. Tim has played in it for the past two years and really enjoyed both the organisation and friendliness of those involved. This year it has moved out of Heraklion itself and is being held at the Dolphin Bay hotel. Full details at,

Rethymno and Paleochora are also very enjoyable, and a lot stronger, but are in July. We will have to give them a miss due to the British in North Shields, down the road for us!

No. It's been on the FIDE site for months. I assume the "Latest 10" tournaments they list is based on the last time a tournament entry was updated. The organisers of this tournament, realising this, keep updating it to make sure its almost always in the "Latest 10" list.

To answer you question, here are three other calendars:

http://skdps.com/calendar/index.php?pag ... 8&all_new= - 185 tournaments in August (or, more accurately, sections of tournaments)

http://www.allyearchess.com/search-chess-tournament.php - 69 tournaments/sections in August

http://chess-results.com/Kalender.aspx?lan=1 - about 30 tournaments in August

There are also some in the United States - http://mdchess.com/index.php?option=com ... &catids=48. http://www.nwchess.com/calendar/TA_USOpen.htm and http://main.uschess.org/index.php?optio ... Itemid=199
