As a matter of interest, how have the selections/entries for the World U20 come about? (assuming that the World U20 hasn't been confused with the European Youth in the layout). To say that it will present a tough challenge for some of the players would not i think be an understatement. Tough job for the coaches as well - historically at World Juniors we have had ratios of 1:1 or 1:2.

Hi Richard,

I was responsible for the World Junior this year and adopted the same principle as the European Individual, open to anyone who wants to go albeit I gave honest advice to anyone who expressed an interest. The close proximity to the European Youth did restrict numbers but I'm still happy with the group that is going. I believe in giving opportunity and hopefully we can continue to send a similar number of players in future years albeit that won't be my decision after this year.

Fair enough - I just wonder if adopting such an approach has the danger of potentially compromising the chances of those who might genuinely have a chance of doing well - as per my point about the coaches. This makes it somewhat different to the European Individual. It's perhaps not so much of an issue if the coaches have the authority to prioritise according to tournament circumstances and/or chances, but i hear that many parents are fairly vociferous in demanding equal treatment/time these days. This was perhaps less of an issue in the past, partly because very few parents actually travelled and perhaps partly because the scarce coaching resources meant that coaches were to some extent forced into prioritisation. Some individuals 'helped' out by giving the impression of being somewhat averse to doing any sort of proper preparation...

Still, Athens in August! That could be an "interesting" time...

Interesting bit of news. Is there any more news around about this match? I'm mostly interested in the score (was it a single win and draws, or a number of wins and losses and a few draws or a single draw?), but was also curious to find out if the match was sponsored (I presume it was), by whom, and where it took place.

I'd forgotten that this tournament was coming up so soon. Good luck to Luke in this! The line-up looks really tough, if anything tougher than the line-up faced at the first three London Chess Classics.

No news on any England players entering this one? Is this still the one with lots of prize money, or am I mixing it up with that other US Open that you mentioned in your report?

Do you know when news on teams (other countries, not just England) can be expected?

Germany has nominated the following team:

Arkadij Naiditsch - 2698
Igor Khenkin - 2670
Daniel Fridman - 2653
Georg Meier - 2637
Jan Gustafsson - 2625

They have also recruited an opening specialist for the tournament which will be Anand's second GM Peter Heine Nielsen

The women team will be:

WGM Elisabeth Pähtz - 2491
WGM Marta Michna - 2385
WGM Tatjana Melamed - 2341
WGM Melanie Ohme - 2315
WGM Elena Levushkina - 2313

They also have an opening specialist during the tournament. That will be GM Michael Prusikin.

Apparently this was all made possible due to the sponsorship of UKA Umweltgerechte Kraftanlagen, HonorarKonzept und ChessBase!!!

Is that different from the team that won the European team championships last year? And who are the defending Olympiad champions? OK, I can look both these up...

The team for Germany at the European Championships for 2011 was: Arkadij Naiditsch, Georg Meier, Daniel Fridman, Jan Gustafsson, and Rainer Buhmann. So it is Khenkin in for Buhmann. And it was Ukraine that took the gold medals in the 2010 Olympiad. Wonder what sort of team Ukraine will be sending this time?

Interesting news on the sponsorship front as well (regarding Germany).

I think Lawrence's approach is perfectly sensible. The major championships are viewed as 'open' by most countries, so why shouldn't England follow suit and allow anyone to play? The problem is that there is the potential for difficulties if you throw it open to anyone AND try to organise an official group. This is an U20 championships remember; Lets imagine that Lawrence knows that a particular junior regularly takes (recreational) drugs. Said junior then put his or her name forward to play, what should Lawrence do?

Sending 4 very strong Juniors to this event is really good Lawrence has got a great group who punch above there grade.Im sure that if a player had a chance of a medal or high place the other players would not mind if he had some extra time with the coach, indeed i would suggest the other juniors would also want to help there team. When Peter went with the England team other player's where more than willing to chip in and help with the chess be it a friendly games or looking at an opening or ideas and any other chess coaches will also help out.I have never found a parent who traveled with any group i went to wanting to stop anther child from having any extra help there may need from a coach. Parents where very supportive of each other and wanting to help the chess coaches so that there could spend more time with the children looking at chess.
I can see no problems what so ever with this group of juniors and we should thank Lawrence for bringing together such a strong bunch of players who will be playing for England.
