Presumably unrated as it would have to be 40/100 + 20 instead of 35/105 + 15.

Nice exciting Sadler-McShane game after a sedate 4. d3 Anti-Berlin Lopez start. Is it all theory, anyone know? And can Sadler survive if McShane plays 20. ..Qh4? [EDIT]....Or maybe ...Ne3 and ...Qg5?

7 .. Ne7 is a newish idea, but one played this year by Kramnik against Aronian and Caruana, by Ponomariov against Areshchenko and Karjakin against Vallejo Pons.

So theory in the sense that it's a position the top players are evidently working on. Not theory in the sense that anyone has written a book about it (that I know of). My personal definition of theory is what I can find in a database, in this case the collection of games from this year's TWICs.

Thanks Roger.

I see McShane unsurprisingly had better ideas than my suggested Queen sorties to g5 or h4.

Sadler's position still looking decidedly uncomfortable.

The computer suggests that McShane's f7-f6 was riskier than c7-c5 (level) and that Sadler, now having a long think, will be better by Nd2-b3 with Nc5 supporting either b7 or e5-e6 according to Black's reply.

Good call by the machine there, as Sadler played e6 and then N-b3-c5, winning the exchange to emerge a piece ahead in the ending which he duly converted.

Do we call that a notable victory for Sadler? I guess Sadler & McShane are both part-time players these days, but Sadler is both more part-time and lower-rated than McShane, and also longer semi-retired. The game must have required strong nerves on Sadler's part c. moves 15-25, certainly.

Does makes you wish they were both active/free enough to turn out in a full-strength English team in the Olympiad.
