Tata Steel 2013

Post by Simon Brown » Tue Jan 15, 2013 3:41 pm

Unfashionable as it appears to be to discuss real chess on this forum - the Tata Steel tournament is worth a look.

Anand has just beaten Caruana and Aronian, the latter today with Black in 23 moves. Is he back? And can anyone with an engine tell me where Aronian went wrong?

There are computer assessments on the official site alongside the live games: http://www.tatasteelchess.com/tournament/livegames

Carlsen has played the Ponziani against Harikrishna - he appears to have good winning chances after 37 moves.

he does seem to take the "I can play anything I want with White and win" thing rather to extremes doesn't he?!

V impressed with Anand today but would like to know how much of it was preparation (unused for Gelfand?) before I get too excited.

Never mind Anand, it seems that Aronian is in a bit of a slump right now.......

A beautiful finish in Harikrishna's game today:

No doubt coming to Leonard's Evening Standard column in five months' time!

A high match up rate with the top three choices of the on-line Houdini from both players, but then they were positions where inaccuracy would likely be fatal. Interestingly Houdini doesn't like Black's choice of b6 or White's choice of g4 and Rf3, all of which are key ingredients in the type of game both players appear to have sought.

Van Wely with black seems to be pretending 30 years of theoretical opinion, nuances and improvements never happened.

What does anybody think about the game Peter Leko v Magnus Carlsen which is playing at the moment?

It's a same colour bishop ending but Carlsen has isolated doubled pawns and the centre is blocked.

Is it possible for him to win that or will it most likely be a draw?

Magnus can open the centre at any time, but his isolated doubled pawns look very weak to me

Yeah, watching that one as well. Looks pretty drawish, hard to see how White makes any progress.

Incidentally White is the only one who could ever dream of winning that, but it looks like Black is holding it.

Yes James, if black wasn't Magnus Carlsen then I would agree with you ;-)

I'm expecting a draw after a bit more token probing from Leko.
