Re: Tromso World Cup 2013
I can imagine that there will be a lot of upsets as they are only 2-game matches followed by rapid and blitz.
It seems curious to me that seed 1 always played seed 128, 2 vs 127 etc at these World Cups. Why can't they do a similar seeding system to Wimbledon where Seed 1 plays anyone from seed 65-128?
Perhaps in reality the ratings and ability of most of these players are so close that it makes little difference in the long run.

Re: Tromso World Cup 2013
Gawain Jones (seeded 72) has a tough journey! Assuming he wins all his games and faces the top seed from other games he would have:
Round / Seed / Name / Country / FIDE grade
1) 57. A. Shimanov (RUS) 2655
2) 8. G. Kamsky (USA) 2741
3) 25. D. Navara (CZE) 2715
4) 9. S. Mamedyarov (AZE) 2775
5) 1. L. Aronian (ARM) 2813
6) 4. A. Grischuk (RUS) 2785
7) 2. F. Caruana (ITA) 2796
Mickey Adams, being seeded higher at 14 would seemingly have a slightly easier start:
Round / Seed / Name / Country / FIDE grade
1) 115. Wan Yunguo (CHN) 2512
2) 51. Y. Kryvoruchko (UKR) 2678
3) 19. V. Ivanchuk (UKR) 2731
4) 3. V. Kramnik (RUS) 2784
5) 6. H. Nakamura (USA) 2772
6) 2. F. Caruana (ITA) 2796
7) 1. L. Aronian (ARM) 2813
and because they are opposite sides of the draw if they do win all their games they will meet in the final!!

What happens if Aronian and Caruana meet in the final and both get their tickets to the Candidates via the World Cup - as they will likely get into the Candidates by rating alone.
Would the semi-finalists get their Candidates spots or would it be people lower down in the rating list than those two?

Re: Tromso World Cup 2013
According to the all knowing wikipedia, Aronian and Kramnik have already booked their place in the 2014 candidates based on their average rating from August 2012 to July 2013. If either get to the final then Karjakin is the next in line and if both then Radjabov will also qualify by rating instead.Andrew Bak wrote:What happens if Aronian and Caruana meet in the final and both get their tickets to the Candidates via the World Cup - as they will likely get into the Candidates by rating alone.

The 2 World Cup finalists qualify for the Candidates
If either of them manage second in the Grand Prix (given Topalov is first in the GP, and not playing in the WC), then the third in the GP qualifies - we are likely talking here about Mamedyarov, Caruana or Grischuk finishing second and third, there are other possibilities
If either of the WC finalists are Aronian or Kramnik, who both qualify by rating for the Candidates once they play in the WC, then Karjakin gets in by rating - if the WC final is Aronian v Kramnik, then Karjakin qualifies along with Radjabov, as Steven says, as far as I know

According to chessbomb, the start is delayed by 15 minutes due to the long queue for player security checks.....
