Thanks for the link to the live games, Mick.

Come to think of it Grischuk's 39.gxh3 seemed unecessary to me.
Probably he wouldn't have been able to win even if he hadn't played it, though.

Giri lost, boy.

Ivanchuk won - perhaps he intends to play the part of Tybalt in romantic Paris.

:D Have a nasty feeling that Tybalt came to a sticky end? - hopefully Vassily will avoid that and the demon time trouble.

Romeo was quicker than Tybalt who was quicker than Mercutio who was quite quick-tempered.
All three came to a dead end. If Ivanchuk is Tybalt - king of cats - then Grischuk may be Mercutio and Caruana Romeo.
We shall see who meets a sticky end in Paris.

Ivanchuk lost to Grischuk in round 5

Giri lost again, to Bacrot this time

Gelfand drew with white, and leads on +2

Nakamura, Caruana and Ivanchuk on +1

Grischuk back to 50%

Round 6 today

Mick Norris>Ivanchuk lost to Grischuk in round 5<
Mercutio wounds Tybalt, it could prove fatal to Tybalt's chances in Paris.

Mick Norris>Giri lost again, to Bacrot this time<
That's the third loss for "the young Petruchio" and leaves him all alone at the back with 2 draws.

Incidently, Paris is in Romeo & Juliet - Count Paris is a kinsman of Prince Escalus and seeks to marry Juliet. He is described as handsome, somewhat self-absorbed, and very wealthy. I'd say that's a fair description of Paris as a city, too.

Round 6 - Caruana beat Ivanchuk - all other games drawn

Caruana joins Gelfand in the lead

Whereas I'd like Gelfand to win in Paris, I'd like Caruana to qualify for the Candidates

Looks to me like Grishchuk may have to win (at least) 3 of his 5 remaining games to qualify for the Candidates

Don't want to upset Mick, but Caruana & Grischuk could do themselves a power of good if they manage to defeat Gelfand. Guess who Gelfand plays in the next two rounds - you got it, Grischuk then Caruana!

It wouldn't upset me, none of the players I dislike are playing in Paris - difficult for Gelfand as he has yet to play Nakamura (with black too)

Caruana black against Nakamura today, who is in third place, so really the key round

Gelfand beat Grischuk and goes above him and Anand in the Live Ratings to world number 6 :)

Gelfand plays black against Caruana today, an unlikely win would take Gelfand above him too

More significantly, Gelfand now +3, Nakamura +2, Caruana +1 in Paris with 4 rounds left, so looks like Caruana needs a win today and Grischuk is out of the running for outright first

Grischuk beat Giri rather easily, but still seems too far behind

At the first time control, Caruana looks likely to beat Gelfand, and Ivanchuk is slightly better against Nakamura according to

Seems Ivanchuk lost on time against Nakamura at move 55 in a level position.

Nakamura 5.5, Gelfand and Caruana 5, three rounds left, rest day tomorrow, Giri (in last place) v Caruana round 9, Nakamura v Gelfand round 10.

Nakamura up to his highest ever live rating of 2794, a win in the next round would take him up to 2nd in the live ratings
