I can vouch for that. Very humble and very approachable.

I don't seem to be able to find the pairings anywhere, does anyone know, what matchups have I got to look forward to tomorrow evening...?

(just found them, on the us chess champs site)

Aronian's Facebook page shows a very well-adjusted and down-to-earth guy, who seems to be enjoying his life. The pic in the Berlin garden with his mother is a classic.

In some ways you almost wonder if Aronian is actually too 'normal' to be a world champion - I mean in the sense of subordinating absolutely everything else to winning the title. It is the same thing people used to say about the finest Armenian player of an earlier generation, Rafik Vaganian. There's a very good profile of Vaganian here, written by Genna Sosonko on Vaganian's 50th birthday in 2001. I wonder whether some of the things in it might ring a bell for Aronian too?

I fully concur with Lawrence's comments about Levon Aronian. I would say much the same about Viswanathan Anand. Therefore I don't agree with Austin.

Nakamura starting with two whites and Kamsky with two blacks - what's that all about then? :?:

If you look at any standard APA pairing table, you'll find that one player starts with two Whites and one with two Blacks. In a ten player APA, No 1 has the double White and No 6 the double Black.

It's just more noticeable if there are only four players.

That said, these pairings seem to be non-standard.

The event turned out to be a nice warm-up for Carlsen for the World Championship match in November. An interesting format when compared to other events. I wonder if we will see more events like this?

Couple of links to Carlsen's blogs:

That last link won't work yet, but I'm presuming it will at some point...

I wonder if that last-round 'swindle' by Carlsen to beat Aronian will faze Anand?

I wish people would use the word "swindle" more advisedly (I even wrote an article on this once, which you can now find on the KIngPin website). Somehow Aronian cocked it up but he certainly wasn't swindled.

Under advice Chessbase News have amended their report headline -

Sinquefield 06: Magic Magnus swindles

to

Sinquefield 06: Magic Magnus wins again

Magic!

I've long suspected that someone over there follows things over here...

(and I've put quote marks round 'swindle' in my original post)

They probably want to make sure they don't miss any nuggets from Nigel Short or from Sabrina ...
