That's a record 7th title for Svidler (USSR and Russia combined)

Re: Russian Championship October 2013
A fabulous achievement by Svidler , though in fairness comparisons with the old USSR championships are difficult.
For example, Spassky won 40 years ago ahead of a field including: Petrosian, Tal, Smyslov, Karpov, Korchnoi, Geller, Keres, Polugaevsky, Taimanov, & Beliavsky. So 5 past or future world champions, and 6 candidates.
Btw the USSR team for the European team championship in Bath that year in board order was:
1 Spassky, 2 Petrosian, 3 Korchnoi, 4 Karpov, 5 Tal, 6 Smyslov, 7 Geller
8 Kuzmin.
Imagine pitching up on, say, board 7 and finding Geller there

The England team that faced them in 1973 wasPeterFarr wrote: 1 Spassky, 2 Petrosian, 3 Korchnoi, 4 Karpov, 5 Tal, 6 Smyslov, 7 Geller

IM Hartston 2470
IM Keene 2445
Markland 2405
Whiteley 2340
Botterill 2410
IM Wade 2365
Stean 2320
Miles 2375
Michael Stean had that honour and drew, as did Hartston and Miles. With the exception of Bob Wade and Penrose (in the squad but left out for this match), the entire team was under 30, under 25 for most of them.

Yes, and Eley was the 2nd reserve after Miles.
It was a strongish team , though time has been kinder to the reputations of some than others. I wonder what team talks were like .

The ChessBase report suggests that Kramnik resigned because he was busted, rather than that he blundered a Rook.Simon Brown wrote:Dunno what happened there. Looks like Kramnik dropped a rook after he had allowed a good position to drift. I still thinbk he was clearly much better at move 58!

From The Chess Mind
Kramnik did much of the pushing, and was better for good chunks of the game, though never winning. A draw was just about always there for the taking, but no guts, no glory: he kept pressing, and with 67...Kh3 he was on his way over the edge. Maybe 69...Rd3 or 69...Ng4+ would have kept things together, but 69...b5? got him in trouble, and 71...Nf7 left him lost. (Maybe he didn't see that 75.Bd4 would stop all of his threats?)
