Interesting missed tactic in Tisdall, Jonathan D-Gretarsson, Hjorvar Steinn On move 23 black has the unlikely Ng4 which although it doesn't win on the spot would have swung the game in black's favour due to the various back rank tricks.

White's move 31 swung the assessment from +10 to -5. Nice tactic but I suspect white didn't see it that way

Morozevich's game today was terrifically entertaining.

Kosovo presumably. It's de facto independent of Serbia but not a state recognised by the UN or the IOC. As a consequence, FIDE and the European Chess Union don't officially recognise it either, but allow club teams under a sort of stateless status.

Rd 6 Jutes of Kent v Kosovo the de facto independent state of Serbia but not a state recognised by the UN or the IOC. The squad contains 5 Kosovans, two Serbs and an Albanian in a pear tree.

As what I am about to relay now is hearsay I'm not naming names but an IM friend of mine in another team was approached by an IM norm seeker 2-3 days ago who offered a 100 Euros for a draw. My friend wasn't interested and told him so but also pointed out that even if he had agreed to the deal the IM norm seeker would have still needed nearly another 100 elo points to reached the desired rating. The IM norm seeker replied "rating eez no problem". So I am expecting him to turn up at the Cup of Don sometime soon....

I suppose it's symptomatic of the fact that I don't play swiss events, but these pairings are really annoying me! They don't seem to pair teams on the same matchpoints either by gamepoints or by seeding! So, by whatever system they are using, it came to pass that yesterday Jutes and Barbican. both among the stronger teams on 50%, played yet stronger teams whilst White Rose played Edinburgh. Now today, White Rose, by far one of the weakest teams on 6/10, are still playing weaker opposition than are Barbican on 4/10!

I believe that Barbican is the only team all of whose opponents have been in the top 30. There is no earthly reason why. We have had one excellent result (beating beskitas, 20th seed) and convincingly beat the one slightly weaker team we played, but have lost two matches (albeit against significantly higher rated sides) by greater margins than might have been expected - so overall, "about right" for our seeding. So what is so special about us that we should get this string of pairings?!

A bit confusing that Svilder game really, because on superfical inspection is just looks like he donated a piece then an exchange to make it a rook. Likely some deeper explanation than that of course.

Those pairings do sound a bit odd, but anything short of the top/bottom few places in swiss events does tend to be pretty well totally random anyway. Especially so with such a massive range of strength differences involved.

The other odd thing is white rose's default being carried on board 5. Its clearly the regulations by now but surely every other league style thing known to man would force it to be on bottom board? Still White Rose aren't doing badly for a 5 handed team :)
