"The correction re Thompson ID is now made.

Maybe you could post a reply from the tournament organiser and archivist

“The records of the old tournaments were kept partly in hand written form only. When I transferred all the tournament history to a computer database system it on occasions was very difficult to tell the difference between for example “L” and “I”. I can assure you that the records for players that have visited Guernsey on many occasions is perfectly correct because they check it for me every year. The only way I can ensure the rest is correct is for people to let me know of changes required. I updated the database with the reported required change as soon I was alerted to it. Hopefully with this type of input, it will soon be ’entirely accurate’. ” "

Fred is doing a great job as tournament organiser and is playing as well, so that's commendably efficient to sort it out that quickly.

Round 4 Report

"The 39th Intertrust Guernsey Chess Festival hotted up in Round 4. Top seeded Sergey Tiviakov (Netherlands) played an opening very popular with beginners and showed how it should be played. A quiet opening became more exciting and Vincent Colin (France) found himself a piece down but on the attack. The attack proved insufficient and Tiviakov continued his winning streak. Tiger Hillarp-Persson (Sweden) played a defensive system renowned for its solidity against Mark Hebden (England), but soon decided to break out and a lively game resulted. This boiled down to a queen, bishop and pawns ending, where Mark had more space, which he eventually converted into a won ending. Jovanka Houska (England) launched a central attack against Sabine Fruteau (France) and went on to win. Claude Adrian (France) went forwards against Andreas Schmitz (Germany) and found himself material down but with the opposing king in considerable danger. The game ended in a draw. Jude Lenier (England) had another good win, this time against Pal Magnussen (Sweden). Hebden and Tiviakov share the lead with four straight wins, followed by Houska and Lenier on 3.5.
The Channel Islanders had mixed fortunes. Louis Joualt (Jersey) and Peter Rowe won and there were exciting draws for Fred Hamperl and Toby Brookfield.
The Holiday Tournament was again beset by draws, with only Dennis O’Connell (Ireland) winning on the top boards to take the sole lead on 3.5. Five players share second place a half-point behind. Louise Adrian (France) produced a stunning win in only seven moves. Her younger brothers Leopold and Lucien scored a win and a draw respectively. The Islanders did well, with Richard Le Maitre and Oliver Rowe winning, and there were draws for Russell Finch, Terry Harnden and David Savident."

"Round 5
The 39th Intertrust Guernsey Chess Festival continued at the Peninsula Hotel. Only two players were on 4/4 at the start of the day. English grandmaster Mark Hebden gained a spatial advantage against grandmaster and top seed Sergey Tiviakov, who now represents the Netherlands. Tiviakov fought back and a double-edged middle-game position resulted. Tiviakov won material and went on to win the game smoothly, despite spirited defence from the Englishman. Swedish grandmaster Tiger Hillarp-Persson also appeared to have an advantage against English international master Jovanka Houska. She strengthened her position and reached an ending with an extra pawn, which was sufficient to gain the full point. Unusually, both the top two boards ended in wins for the player with the black pieces. French international master Vincent Colin reached a complicated middle-game against English junior Jude Lenier. Although Lenier mounted a resourceful defence, Colin went on to win the game. French international master Claude Adrian sacrificed a pawn for an attack against England’s Stephen Dilleigh, but agreed a draw shortly afterwards. Rudi von Saldern and Jan Havenaar have only missed one Guernsey festival each and drew against each other in their game. Festival organiser Fred Hamperl sacrificed a rook to win his game and Louis Joualt (Jersey) drew. Sergey Tiviakov is now the sole leader on 5/5, Jovanka Houska has 4.5, (they meet in round 6), and Hebden, Colin and A Schmitz are on 4.
The Holiday tournament sprang into life. Although tournament leader Dennis O’Connell (Ireland) drew with England’s Graham Kershaw, Wim van Hoek, Marc Jongerius (both Netherlands) and Michael Stanners (England) all won with the black pieces sealing a good day for the second player. There were victories for Guernseymen David Savident and Oliver Rowe. Dennis O’Connell, Wim van Hoek and Michael Stanners lead with 4/5."

"Round 6
The 39th Intertrust Guernsey Chess Festival continued at the Peninsula Hotel. Sergey Tiviakov (Netherlands) beat Jovanka Houska (England) to maintain his 100 % score. Even in the unlikely event that he loses his last game, Tiviakov is guaranteed at least a share of first prize. French international master Vincent Colin had an exciting game against English grandmaster Mark Hebden. The advantage changed hands several times, but just when the Frenchman had victory in his grasp, fate struck a cruel blow and Hebden pounced to win the game. The game between Andreas Schmitz (Germany) and Arne Hagesather (Norway) was also exciting and both players had winning chances, before Hagesather sealed victory. Fred Hamperl (Guernsey) had an interesting game, and seemed to have winning chances but eventually it was drawn. Peter Rowe (Guernsey) and Louis Jouault (Jersey) also drew very long games. Tiviakov leads with 6/6, Mark Hebden has 5, and Houska, Jude Lenier and Hagesather are a further half point back. There are 11 players on 4/6, who are still in contention for the minor prizes.
Michael Stanners (England) won against Fritz Bakkes (Netherlands) to take the sole lead in the Holiday tournament. Most of the other top boards were drawn, but Chris Cook (England) won to move into a share of second place. It was a good day for the Guernsey players, with a win for Colin Goman, and draws for David Savident, Russell Finch, Oliver Rowe, and Matthew Kerr.

There have been a few withdrawals as the ferries are being cancelled from Saturday pm, until Tuesday due to the expected bad weather.

"Round 7
The 39th Intertrust Guernsey Chess Festival finished on Saturday. Grandmaster Sergey Tiviakov (Netherlands) brushed aside the latest challenge and had a rapid win to finish on 7/7, the first player to achieve this feat in thirty years at Guernsey. He took away £1200 and the splendid “Guernsey Can” trophy. Mark Hebden (England) did not have things all his own way but he won to finish second on 6/7, a score which usually suffices to win the competition. Jovanka Houska (England) won to take third prize with 5.5. Tiger Hillarp-Persson (Sweden), Vincent Colin (France) and Clive Wismayer (England) finished on 5 to share 4th place. Tournament organiser Fred Hamperl had to settle for the Channel Islands Prize, after an unfortunate loss in the last round. Jude Lenier (England) was unlucky to lose his last game, but had the consolation of taking the Junior prize and also the Most Brilliant Game prize. Sabine Fruteau (France) won the Women’s prize
The Holiday Tournament ended in a tie for first place between Dennis O’Connell (Ireland) and Wim van Hoek (Netherlands) on 5.5/7. They received £300 each, but the Irishman took the trophy on tie-break, despite van Hoek's remarkable last-round game, which he seemed to be winning, then he seemed to be losing, then it looked drawn, then he managed to win it. Both players looked shattered at the end. John Glover, Ray Kearsley and Michael Stanners (all England) shared third place with 5/7. David Savident took the Channel Islands Prize. Dinah Norman (England) and Louise Adrian (France) shared the Women’s prize, and the latter also took the junior prize, just ahead of her younger brothers.
The Peninsula hotel produced an excellent celebration dinner in the evening. The players said their farewells, but most intend to return next year."

A final report including all prize winners will follow, weather conditions permitting. Several players missed the last round as ferries were cancelled for 48 hours, so the players made their escape whilst they could. The airport seems to be functioning at present.
