Well, looks already like the Russian team are going to flop again. When was the last time they actually won anything?

I think the answer is the 2009 World Team Championship (actually held in January 2010).

They were a lot more motivated when failure meant they would never be allowed to play outside Russia again and their family thrown in a Siberian gulag.

Well somehow Russia have hauled themselves back into contention.......

Impressive win from Kramnik yesterday - his opponent is a piece up in the final position, but still totally lost :)

Ukraine (12) v Russia (11) in today's penultimate round, with only China still in contention

1 GM Ivanchuk Vassily 2731 : GM Kramnik Vladimir 2793
2 GM Korobov Anton 2713 : GM Karjakin Sergey 2756
3 GM Moiseenko Alexander 2709 : GM Grischuk Alexander 2785
4 GM Kryvoruchko Yuriy 2701 : GM Nepomniachtchi Ian 2721

China (10) play Germany today and Turkey tomorrow, so could end up on 14 points

Russia have Egypt tomorrow, Ukraine have Armenia

Russia won with 3 draws and a win from Nepo, so they only have to beat Egypt tomorrow to win the title

Nepo won again, Vitiugov and Karjakin drew fairly early, leaving Kramnik to clinch the title with a very interesting 90 move draw

Russia doing their best to mess it up at the death, I see :)

An amazing comeback by them after the first two rounds, though - seven straight wins in a row speaks for itself.
