Gibraltar 2014

Post by Chris Rice » Tue Dec 10, 2013 5:02 am

Better be quick if you want to enter although maybe its already too late. Truly impressive....

Huge turn out expected in Gibraltar. Masters is fully booked two months ahead

The Gibraltar Chess Festival 2014 will attract close to 400 people, including players, families, officials, and visitors, staying ten nights or more in Gibraltar and in neighbouring Spain. There are more than fifty Grandmasters and over a hundred titled players. There will be a higher ratio than ever of female players (40+), said the organisers.

They added: Fifty countries will be represented, including players travelling from Bangladesh, Namibia, Egypt, Mongolia, New Zealand, and Brazil. Record numbers will be travelling from India (12), China (6), Norway (20) etc.

Another plus point is that Simen Agdestein, former coach of new 22-year old World Champion, Magnus Carlsen, is bringing his chess students from Oslo. The Festival has been voted Best Open in the World for the last two years by the Association of Chess Professionals, which shows to what extent this event is putting Gibraltar on the map.

Pairings at http://chess-results.com/tnr120746.aspx ... d=1&wi=821

No acceleration, but Adams faces a player rated 2287 on top board.

I see that GM Kevin Spraggett is down to play (quite) a few boards below Nigel Short. That probably won't stop them from mixing the business of playing chess and chess politics, though.

A nice little deflection tactic to finish this one off:

One for Jonathan Bryant: white win with not one but two exchange sacrifices.

very nice. I wonder if there's been a game with all four rooks given up for minor pieces. Presumably there must have been at some point. Anybody know of one?

I see four GMs got scalped in the first round at Gibraltar today:

IM Sanchez Castillo Sarai Caroli (2219) 1-0 GM Georgiev Kiril (2653)
GM El Debs Felipe De Cresce (2520) 0-1 Amgalanbaatar Ravdanlkhumbuu (2137)
Mihajlov Sebastian (2185) 1-0 GM Mekhitarian Krikor Sevag (2566)
GM Tseitlin Mark D (2389) 0-1 Knudsen Jes West (1874)

Still an awful lot of GMs won today. Playing here are a total of 68 GMs and 38 IMs according to chess-results.com.

I do like the Gibraltar chess tournament very well run and a wonderful hotel to play chess in.I always be grateful to Stewart Reuben for having the courage to invite Peter to play in this event when he was 7.We had a great time in Gibraltar and the people are so friendly. If you get the chance go on one of the boat trips to look for sharks/dolphins.

Well its time for some ELO http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IlfCsj7gWQ

keep safe dry every one the weather going to get very bad for the weekend.
when you are successful many losers bark at you.

Lawrence Trent's draw with Sutovsky is worthy of note in round 2.

White was probably wishing he could have managed a fourth by the end of the game :)
