English success in Hungary

Post by Leonard Barden » Sat May 31, 2014 3:34 pm

GM Gawain Jones and WIM Sue Maroroa have just scored excellent results in the strong Zalakaros Open, which finished today. More than half the 70 players were GMs or IMs.

Gawain finished tied second on 6.5/9, losing only to the tournament winner GM Igor Kovalenko of Latvia who totalled 7/9. Gawain gained 6.8 Fide points to add to his 2654 in the June Fide list which was also published today. There was quite a bit of confusion over his performance due to round 2 where he managed to win with K+B+a pawn against K+N, but several sources reported the game as a loss for Gawain which led to his running total being misquoted eg on chessbomb.

Those level with Gawain included 60-year-old Alexander Belyavsky, but the new Hungarian star Richard Rapport could only manage 6.

WIM Sue Maroroa was seeded a lowly 68 out of 70 in this powerful field, and began with two defeats, but she recovered extremely well. Her final total of 3.5/9 was a 2251 performance, nearly 100 points above her rating, and she gained a whopping 19.4 rating points. This augurs well for her Olympiad debut with the England women's team at Tromso.
