Ah, that old trick. Never understood why so many people fall into that trap. What time control was it played at?

EDIT: 90 min for 40 moves + 30 min for the rest of the game + 30 sec increment for every move played starting from the first move.

I have to admit that I have been caught with that one, in a 30 min game. I don't play the Caro these days though.

When white plays Qe2 he has to be trying to set up this mate, I can see no other possible justification for the move. If black is aware of the trap then he comes out of the opening with a very good game.

It's because Nd7 is such a normal move to Caro players, that it's played on auto-pilot.

The more "usual" version of this is 1 e4 c6 2 d4 d5 3 Nc3 de4 4 Ne4 Nd7 5 Qe2 Ngf6 6 Nd6 mate. At least one IM has fallen for it in "classical" chess IIRC.

"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Dharshan Kumaran fell for this once when he was already a very strong player. Pretty sure it was at the Lloyds Bank Masters, might have been a slightly different position.

IIRC he did that with White in the not dissimilar line of the Budapest where Black "hangs" his bishop?

Yeah that sounds right, I was there but my memory is not what it used to be and understandably he wasn't exactly boasting about it :) 1988/89, something like that.

That's a nice game by Gawain. Possibly taking inspiration from his second (Richard Palliser) who has written a book on the Torre.
