You can also follow the games on chessbomb.
Lagrave-Carlsen has gone crazy, although the site's Stockfish reckons it's about equal. Carlsen's move 7. .. a5 appears a novelty, everyone else just castles or plays .. d6.

Caruana beats Topalov and the other two games drawn. Although as Roger says the Carlsen game was anything but boring. Couple of reports:

Caruana looking good on 3/3, having just beaten Carlsen with black. I have no idea if it was preparation, but Carlsen's bishop's opening looked unconvincing to me. A long way to go, but we could be looking at Carlsen's next challenger

After round 2, the Chess.com report saidGraham Borrowdale wrote:Caruana looking good on 3/3, having just beaten Carlsen with black. I have no idea if it was preparation, but Carlsen's bishop's opening looked unconvincing to me. A long way to go, but we could be looking at Carlsen's next challenger
Caruana now at 2815.7, with Topalov's highest ever 2816.9 next in his sights - Carlsen's live rating down ( ) to 2861 (which is still higher than anyone else has ever achieved)After the game, Carlsen agreed with the statement that Caruana was becoming his main rival. On the live rating list, Caruana is now 2810, the seventh-highest live rating of all time. If he goes to 3-0 tomorrow, he'll pass GM Vladimir Kramnik's all-time best.

In other words, "We haven't got a clue how it will work, but we'll worry about it if/when it happens".More Than Four Players: If more than four players are tied for first place, a combination of math tiebreaks and playoffs will be used to find the top four players and the procedure described above (“Four Players”) shall be followed. The format if more than four players are tied for first will be determined by the Chief Arbiter and Chief Organizer.

Have just seen Caruana's win v Aronian. What a game! Seems silly to say that one is really quite impressed with the world number two (I assume that is what he is now) ... but there it is. I have yet to see anyone really explain Caruana's style, other than to say that in terms of accuracy and preparation he is clearly of the computer generation, which will soon be a meaningless thing to say in any event. Anyway, some real creative credo on show here - he can't have been "prepared" for what to do if Black closes the centre with ...d4.
But go on, who can explain Caruana?

I'm not sure Caruana can even explain. In an interview with Why Chess:
And how would you describe your chess style? Are you a tactician, a strategist?!
Caruana: I wouldn’t assess it in such categories. It seems to me I’m a good fighter. I enjoy playing different types of position, both tactical and strategic. I can’t say there’s anything I avoid. I can attack on a board full of pieces or manoeuvre in a roughly even position, and I’ve got nothing against the endgame.

He had prepared it for someone elseJonathan Rogers wrote:Have just seen Caruana's win v Aronian. What a game! which has an excellent photo of Topalov, plus the following
His previous game against MVL had prep that he had done previously for Mamedyarov and not used, so maybe the key is Caruana is just better prepared (and has immense talent of course)Caruana introduced another new idea that he'd prepared for someone else with 15.Na2. Play was very complicated and it seemed Aronian might be close to equalisation but according to Caruana once 22.Qh5 arrived black's position was close to collapse and Caruana kept the counter-play to a minimum in scoring his fourth victory in a row.
EDIT Caruana's live rating is now above the highest achieved by Anand and Topalov, and number 4 of all time (but he is 15 points below Aronian's highest who is third behind Kasparov second and Carlsen)

Apparently the explanation is simple...he's not human. 5/5 unbelievable.Jonathan Rogers wrote: But go on, who can explain Caruana?

If Caruana scores 10/10, what would his new live rating be?
