Budapest GM tournament

Post by Leonard Barden » Sat Aug 16, 2014 9:15 pm

Yang-Fan Zhou and Dan Fernandez are competing in this 10-player all-play-all which began today. I'm not sure of the GM norm but it looks like 7/9, which leaves little room for accidents.

Not quite so little if 2561 Hungarian GMs are going to give away pieces for no reason!

The GM norm figure is 6.5/9.

It was near the time control, and the probability is that Hera intended 33...Rb5 34 Bc3 Bxd5 35 Rxd5 Nxd5 36 Bxe5, overlooking till too late the zwischenzug 35...Nf3+ 36 Kg2 Nxd5. That will do nicely for my Evening Standard column.

It seems ENG also has Mark Lyell playing in the IM tournament and Meri Grigoryan and Diane Mihajlova in the Open. Presumably no live boards but worth keeping an eye on the results.

Yang-Fan and Dan both won in yesterday's sixth round and now share second place on 4/6. Both need 2.5/3 for the GM norm and both have two Whites to come, so it's possible.

Lyell is a regular there. One wouldn't be surprised if he has a second home in Budapest!
