Fearing Caruana

Post by MJMcCready » Wed Oct 08, 2014 7:01 pm

I went to watch the Grand Prix in Baku today. I have to say I was a little taken aback by how Svidler showed so much respect to Caruana. He seemed very pensive and reluctant to get into a such a sharp game with him and spent many minutes thinking after f3 was played. He didn't seem very happy to get into such a sharp game.

I'm a bit confused, he voluntarily played a very sharp line of his pet opening and in the interviews afterwards explained that's it's a line that him and Caruana have contested before and with reversed colours and it was Svidler who get his surprise move in first.

Hmmm, it certainly didn't look like that whilst the game was going on.
