It's such an elegant move that you might at a pinch spot it. That's particularly if you've ever punted a Bxe6 sacrifice and noticed that if declined you had a Qxg6 follow up. I think it's easier than the win in the Giri-Ivanchuk queen ending.

Round 10 results

Van Wely, L. - Hou, Y. 1-0
Jobava, B. - Caruana, F. 0-1
Radjabov, T. - Aronian, L. ½-½
Ivanchuk, V. - Carlsen, M. ½-½
Vachier-Lagrave - Wojtaszek ½-½
Ding, L. - So, W. ½-½
Saric, I. - Giri, A. 0-1

As Carlsen's game finished early he had quite a lot to say in a post match interview afterwards. Such as:

On his game against Ivanchuck “He just forced the draw. He's allowed to do that. He sometimes does this. (...) He's an inscrutable fellow. I'm a chess player, I like to play chess. This is not chess, this is just nonsense.”

On his visit to the art museum: “I don't know much about art, so I tried to ask the questions a kid would ask, like ‘how many cows are there in the painting.’ That was the first thing I thought about. But they couldn't give me the answer. I thought, well, there's a question no one asked!”

Carlsen on Jobava: “A good player, that's what I found out when playing against him. He does have a very good understanding; there's always some point to his playing. He has lots of good ideas. It's just that sometimes they don't work and he thinks: ah, I'll play it anyway.”

Carlsen on Wei Yi: “[He] is playing brilliantly. I think he has 2675, and that was I think exactly the same I had at that age. It's hard to tell if he will just be a world-class player or one of the best, but he's really good.”

Standings:

1 Carlsen 7.5
2-3 So, Vachier-Lagrave 6.5
4-7 Ivanchuk, Giri, Caruana, Ding Liren 6.0
8-9 Wojtaszek, Radjabov 5.0
10 Aronian 4.5
11 Van Wely 3.5
12-13 Hou Yifan, Saric 3
14 Jobava 1.5

So just half a point behind Carlsen now. Jobava lost again.

Will be an interesting match up today between the new no 6 and 7 in the world, Giri v So. While in form Ding Liren is White vs Carlsen. Two rounds left, this tournament isn't over. Jobava's tournament is of course, he must be totally despondent and currently searching for a deep enough hole to hide after donating a piece for nothing yesterday.

Aronian, L. - Ivanchuk, V. ½-½
Caruana, F. - Radjabov, T. ½-½
Hou, Y. - Jobava, B. 1-0

Interesting Q. and P. ending. Giri-So. Maybe a draw.

Probably was a draw but very difficult to defend for So as Giri finally won on move 111.

Giri's long game against So turned out to be even more impressive than I originally thought as it ended Wesley So's undefeated run going back to April 2014 which was 73 games ago. We are now finally down to the last round and its still not decided yet. Carlsen is white against Saric but he did lose to him last time out. Giri is Black v Wojtaszek and could put pressure on Carlsen with a win but you wonder how much energy he'll have left after yesterday. An incentive for Giri is that if he does win he breaks 2800.

Round 12 results

Van Wely, L. - Jobava, B. ½-½
Radjabov, T. - Hou, Y. ½-½
Ivanchuk, V. - Caruana, F. ½-½
Vachier-Lagrave - Aronian, L. ½-½
Ding, L. - Carlsen, M. ½-½
Saric, I. - Wojtaszek, R. 1-0
Giri, A. - So, W. 1-0

Standings:
1 Carlsen 8.5
2 Giri 8
3 Vachier-Lagrave, Wesley So, Liren Ding 7.5
6-7 Ivanchuk, Caruana 7
8 Radjabov 6
9 Aronian 5.5
10 Wojtaszek 5
11 Hou Yifan 4.5
12-13 Van Wely, Saric 4
14 Jobava 2

Round 13 (begins half an hour earlier today at 12 GMT)

So, W. - Van Wely, L.
Wojtaszek, R. - Giri, A.
Carlsen, M. - Saric, I.
Aronian, L. - Ding, L.
Caruana, F. - Vachier-Lagrave
Hou, Y. - Ivanchuk, V.
Jobava, B. - Radjabov, T.

Meanwhile in the Challengers there was the Wei Yi game that Chris K has covered above but take a look at the game Timman-Gunina

and Timman resigned 0-1. Apparently though if he just takes the knight 41 Kxg3 exf4+ 42 Kxf4 Rf8+ 43 Ke3 he's a piece up for nothing. No one knows why Timman resigned as Gunina says she was away from the boards and when she got back he was gone. Probably thought he was losing again from a winning position and stormed off in disgust is a fair explanation I'm guessing.

It's almost all over. Carlsen is now getting the upper hand against Saric, so would finish on 9 or 9.5. Meanwhile Giri drew to finish on 8.5 with Vachier-Lagrave and So both winning to join him on 8.5. Ling has an advantage of several pawns and position against Aronian, so he will likely reach 8.5 as well.

Carlsen drew and won the event. 15-year-old Wei Yi won the Challengers with an astonishing 10.5/13 (8 wins and 5 draws). Will be fascinating to see how he does in the main event next year.

On a sadder note, Jan Timman scored 3/13, finishing bottom and losing 40 rating points. It is not so much the rating points, but the way he was losing that was difficult to watch.

I thought some of the results of the final round were very surprising. So bouncing back like that was quite impressive, Caruana losing as White, Aronian losing disastrously again and in a reverse of what had been happening in the tournament Jobava won a game he should have lost.

Final round - Masters Round 13
So, W. - Van Wely, L. 1-0
Wojtaszek, R. - Giri, A. ½-½
Carlsen, M. - Saric, I. ½-½
Aronian, L. - Ding, L. 0-1
Caruana, F. - Vachier-Lagrave 0-1
Hou, Y. - Ivanchuk, V. ½-½
Jobava, B. - Radjabov, T. 1-0

Looking at the final standings those that finished a half point behind Carlsen all look to have established their worthiness to challenge for the world title although Carlsen would still be the favourite against any of the four. But perhaps more significant is what happened to Caruana? Next year's A-Group will be very interesting with 15 year old Wei Yi stepping up. In the B-Group this year his performance rating was the same as Ivanchuk's in the A-Group.

Final Round 13 Standings:
1 Carlsen 9
2-5 Vachier-Lagrave, Giri, So, Ding Liren 8.5
6 Ivanchuk 7.5
7 Caruana 7
8 Radjabov 6
9-10 Wojtaszek, Aronian 5.5
11 Hou Yifan 5
12 Saric 4.5
13 Van Wely 4
14 Jobava 3
