The overshoot effect becomes more visible with K=40, notwithstanding that it's more difficult with monthly rating lists.

What seems to have happened is that you play 20 games in a month, which is possible with back to back tournaments and then play a field around your own rating but score 15 from 20. That's a plus 5 score which a K=40 rule transforms into a 200 Elo point change. At the level he's now reached that becomes unrepeatable as the K drops to 10, once past 2400.

He shouldn't have been on k=40 anyway. One event was reported very late, causing his rating to stay below 2300. We really should be rejecting late reports, but that would also lead to complaints.

While the rating leap is clearly too great, this is not a weak player. In the European U14s, where I don't think it can be argued that the field was generally overrated, he scored 7/9 against 2206 opposition. He may well grow into his rating.

I can't see that the early signs of these advanced K-factors are particularly promising, which is unsurprising considering the ratings at the lower levels have become essentially random. It is a solution to correct a short term problem of under-rated players, it can't work to correct the permanent situation of hundreds or thousands of new such players entering the system every year.

It also only attempts to mitigate one side of the problem - the under-rated juniors, not the ongoing under-rating of adult players who play them. It is also undermined by juniors spending a lot of time playing each other and giving the points back.

Whilst it would make the system more complicated there must be a case for dramatically reducing the K-factors of anyone (including juniors) in games where they play other juniors. This would essentially recognise the unreliability of junior ratings which are just jumping all over the place like yo-yos. Would mitigate to some extent the obvious deflation (certainly in England) going on amongst adult players in the 2100-2300 brackets.

Richard has a good point here. Nick, have any of the simulations and models looked for the possibility of groupings of players experiencing deflation or inflation outside the norms? i.e. the overall deflation and variation may be within acceptable limits, but small groups of players may experience much greater volatility and simulations may not be designed to detect this sort of effect? Populations of players might "yo-yo wildly" to use a colloquial expression.

Looking again at the January 2015 list, I see that Wesley So (2762) is only just behind Nakamura (2776). On the current live ratings, So (2781) has overtaken Nakamura (2776):

http://ratings.fide.com/top.phtml?list=men
http://www.2700chess.com/

[Not sure why the URL for the FIDE top 100 has 'list=men'!!, thankfully it does include Hou Yifan at number 70 in the world, with Judit Polgar still there at number 67 - how long will it take for her to drop off the lists due to inactivity after her retirement? Did Hou Yifan become the women's number one when Polgar retired, or will it not be until Polgar's rating list entry goes inactive?]

Does anyone know if Nakamura is playing in any events in January? If not, then So might be the new US number one in February. It will be interesting to see if he and So drive each other on to new heights (I have no idea how seriously they both take the 'title' of US number one, though selection for Olympiad board 1 would be a factor to consider).

It depends how you want to define it. It isn't totally unlikely that she will go past in the twelve month run off until Polgar's rating disappears. The lists of active players are defined by activity rather than intent.

Thanks! I had seen that list of 'future events' there, but hadn't scrolled down that far for a while... Yes, I was being lazy in not looking it up myself. It wont be the last time either.

Thanks, Barry. Though following Alan's tip above, I see Nakamura is playing in the Gibraltar Open before then (that would have been my guess, but as Alan said I was too lazy to look it up!). Still, that won't count for the January list as it ends in February, so if So stays ahead in the live ratings, he will be the new US number one in February.

Oh sure. I was thinking also of when Kasparov retired. That was a clear situation where his inactive rating was for a long time higher than the rating of the active world number one.

[PS. I've fixed your quote in my requote of your post - that seems to break in some people's posts for some reason]
