It's been pretty drab stuff so far, let's hope for more exciting chess this time.

Is anyone a particular favourite to win? Is Grischuk that much stronger than the others? Maybe time for Giri to press his claims?

"That much stronger"? No, not particularly: the expected result in a one-off game between Grischuk and Jobava gives 0.66 points to Grischuk, so even the gap between best and worst is nothing huge.

Giri live rating now 2802.8, making him the 9th player above 2800 - will be interesting if he maintains that until the end of the event

A remarkable achievement by Giri and he's right on Caruana's heels. I can't help wondering though why the chess media are not making more of Grischuk's rise to No 2. Not only that he's really putting some distance between himself and Caruana. http://www.2700chess.com/

It's not that Grischuk has been doing anything in actual play apart from beating Kasim from a lost position yesterday, it's that Caruana has been self-destructing his own rating by playing far too much in recent months, as Sutovsky has observed. It's a particularly daft policy since Fide regulations for the 2016 eight-player candidates are that the two ratings spots will be decided by an unweighted average of all 2015 January-December months subject to 30 games played.

This means that getting to No 2 or 3 behind Carlsen early in the year then sitting on the rating for a while so as to pile up the high positions will give a big advantage over rivals who make their rating push late in the year. Caruana had a huge lead as No 2, and has blown it. If this continues he could only qualify for the candidates via the Grand Prix or the World Cup, both unreliable routes, since if the candidates is in the US as expected then Nakamura or So will get the wildcard place.

So if Caruana continues to play actively and perform around 2750 as he has been doing lately he could even miss the candidates altogether. In contrast I think Giri understands and is playing the Fide system by making a big push early in the calendar year.

... and Aronian's situation is worse than Caruana's: he's down to 11 in the live ratings and isn't a participant in the Grand Prix... He may also be doubtful for the new Super/Golden league (if automatic places are awarded to the top-ten rated players).

Nakamura close to breaking above 2800 as well (currently 2797). And he and Caruana lead the Grand Prix - with only four events, surely Giri has left it too late to qualify by that route? Giri will be hoping to qualify by rating? Is there a link to the FIDE regulations for qualification for the 2016 Candidates? Are, here it is:

Not a great deal going on in round 2 and only notable for Kasimdzhanov's win after a rather odd opening from Mamedyarov:

Round 2 results

Radjabov ½-½ Jobava
Jakovenko ½-½ Tomashevsky
Grischuk 2810 ½-½ Andreikin
Mamedyarov 0-1 Kasimdzhanov, Rustam
Giri ½-½ Vachier-Lagrave
Dominguez ½-½ Svidler

Standings:

1= Grischuk, Tomashevsky, Giri 1.5
4= Andreikin, Jakovenko, Kasimdzhanov, Radjabov, Dominguez, Mamedyarov 1
10= Vachier-Lagrave, Svidler, Jobava 0.5

Things didn't go so well for the World no 2 yesterday in a crazy game. Mamedyarov's bounce back after his defeat the previous day was very impressive, winning the Black side of an exchange slav. What exactly Jobava was doing I have no idea.

Round 3

Svidler ½-½ Radjabov
Vachier-Lagrave ½-½ Dominguez
Kasimdzhanov ½-½ Giri
Andreikin 0-1 Mamedyarov
Tomashevsky 1-0 Grischuk
Jobava 0-1 Jakovenko

Standings:

1 Tomashevsky 2½
2= Mamedyarov Jakovenko, Giri 2
5= Kasimdzhanov, Grischuk, Dominguez, Radjabov 1½
9= Vachier-Lagrave, Andreikin, Svidler 1
12 Jobava ½

Round 4

Svidler - Vachier-Lagrave
