I would have thought this announcement would generate more interest. I assume Mr Sinquefield is behind it. Whoever organised it - well done..

Should be interesting but I can see why it might have not set the internet buzzing. It is not a Karpov v Kasparov reunion nor even a Fischer v Spassky one. It is not exactly as though Kasparov and Short are reliving any comparable historic rivalry. Short's shot at the title in 1993 was a one-off and Kasparov had no serious rivals in 1993 anyway.

Kasparov a bit rusty and Nigel playing as much as ever should be interesting.

Do we expect Nigel to do better than in the first part of the 1993 encounter? If match practice makes a difference, he's the one with recent experience. I'm not sure history has reached a verdict on Kasparov's style and why he dominated, but extensive pre-game analysis of sharp openings and early middle games comes into it. That's now a lot easier to replicate with engine assistance.Jonathan Rogers wrote: Short's shot at the title in 1993 was a one-off and Kasparov had no serious rivals in 1993 anyway.

Not sure that's true. I think it's easy to forget quite what an achievement (and a shock) beating Karpov was. Karpov who within a year won Linares in one of the greatest tournament performances of all time.Jonathan Rogers wrote: Kasparov had no serious rivals in 1993 anyway.

True, many/most people probably expected Karpov to drag himself past the finishing line in the Candidates 91-93. But they also expected him to finally get clobbered by kasparov when he got there. Karpov by then was very much having isolated successes - Linares 94 would be the most spectacular - but nothing to suggest that he could last a whole match v Gazza.

I would favour Nigel for this one, as stated Kasparov is rusty; Nigel is not only a very strong rapid player, but still plays full time. Exited to see it

A good indicator may have been this blitz match http://en.chessbase.com/post/garry-kasp ... gium-blitzJon Mahony wrote:I would favour Nigel for this one, as stated Kasparov is rusty; Nigel is not only a very strong rapid player, but still plays full time. Exited to see it
I expect a narrow Kasparov victory

Nigel is now playing in Bangkok - won his first game today.Nick Burrows wrote:A good indicator may have been this blitz match http://en.chessbase.com/post/garry-kasp ... gium-blitzJon Mahony wrote:I would favour Nigel for this one, as stated Kasparov is rusty; Nigel is not only a very strong rapid player, but still plays full time. He then has a very long tiring journey with several flights to get to St. Louis. On that basis alone I tend to favour Kasparov,

I don't think Garry will participate in any kind of match unless he is confident he can win it, though that said I hope he doesn't. Perhaps receiving a drubbing is the only thing that could bring him back to chess.

His ego wouldn't allow him to be beaten game after game, yes you are right, that ship has sailed.
