Re: Fabiano Caruana to Join U.S. Chess Federation
Quick, someone work out how much that will cost the USCF (or the likely sponsor of this move) and net FIDE!
In all seriousness, is this good (increased competition at Olympiads) or bad (buying in players to get results, though Caruana does have dual citizenship to be fair to him)? Can the ECF (or a friendly sponsor) ever compete on this sort of playing field? (And would they want to?)

What took them so long? surely the Italian Federation were never going to match any offer made by Rex.

I make the USCF bill to be €55,250 based on the FIDE Transfer Rules - https://www.fide.com/fide/handbook.html ... w=category.Christopher Kreuzer wrote:Quick, someone work out how much that will cost the USCF (or the likely sponsor of this move) and net FIDE!
That should be €250 payable to FIDE for notification plus €5,000 to FIDE for transferring a GM plus €50,000 payable to the Italian federation in compensation for a player rated over 2700.
Any advance on €55,250 ?
Ah, but I was so much older then. I'm younger than that now.

Caruana has dual citizenship. He was born in the U.S. and started playing chess under the U.S. flag. He transferred to the Italian chess federation about 10 years ago. Nobody in Italy will be surprised by this; if you ask me I'm not sure I would be so happy to depend uniquely on a benefactor that at some point might lose interest and move to a new toy.

Interesting to look back at this:
US captain denial about Caruana
which refers to this
NY Times article
As Dennis Monokroussos says, will an apology follow? (The answer presumably is, it is chess, so no)
