Re: 2nd GM norm for Daniel Fernandez
It is an incredibale coincidence that two people called Daniel Fernandez have the same rating of 2498 at the same time.

It's very unlikely that there would be two people with that particular name and that particular rating at the same time. But the probability that there would be some pair of people with the same name and the same rating at the same time is very high.Stewart Reuben wrote:It is an incredibale coincidence that two people called Daniel Fernandez have the same rating of 2498 at the same time.

Jack, does not that depend on what each person thinks of as very high? It approximates to 0.02% that two people, randomly chosen from those who are rated, will have the same rating. Now they have to have the same first name and also last name.
I suppose I should have mentioned that they are both IMs.
Of course, if you are going to go looking, a Spanish sounding name iz probably still the best place to look. Garcia, Rodriguez and Fernandez are all very common in the FRL.
It was surprising that two people called Jack Rudd both played in Gibraltar.

There's also the "other" Simon WilliamsStewart Reuben wrote: It was surprising that two people called Jack Rudd both played in Gibraltar.

It's claimed that the existence of a duplicate confused the ECF Office into paying the other one for some coaching work.

The claim was Simon's so I'm fairly certain it's true.Roger de Coverly wrote:There's also the "other" Simon WilliamsStewart Reuben wrote: It was surprising that two people called Jack Rudd both played in Gibraltar.

Adam A and C Taylor have probably confused a few opposing players in recent years.

Richard Smith of Cornwall and Richard Smith of Barnstaple had the same grade a couple of years ago.

A tough start for Conor who was closing in on 2400 prior to this event.Mick Norris wrote:Dan beat Conor O'Donnell (2389) in round 3 and plays Gavin Wall (2329) in round 4LawrenceCooper wrote:That takes his live rating to 2498 - 8.4 +5.9 = 2495.5 unless there is another result that has yet to appear on the rating server.Alexander Hardwick wrote:

That does have the benefit that when the grader mixes the two players up and allocates your game to the wrong player it doesn't affect your grade.IM Jack Rudd wrote:Richard Smith of Cornwall and Richard Smith of Barnstaple had the same grade a couple of years ago.

Re: 2nd GM norm for Daniel Fernandez
FIDE used to confuse Julian Hodgson with John Hodgson. This was before the days of FIN (FIDE identification numbers). The only way to determine whether they had got Julian's right was first to look up John's. If it had gone up substantially, that meant they had confused them again. I tried giving the FIDE adminstrator a bottle of booze, to investigate the matter each time, but this did no good.
Julian said the only way forward was for him to give John some private coaching.

Does Dan need another GM norm and 2500?
Anyway nice to see CCF running an IM norm tournament if they could not run a GM tournament.

Sadly a round 4 loss (showing on the CCF page http://www.ccfworld.com/Chess/Results/2 ... I_Norm.htm ) means he is now a few wins away again.LawrenceCooper wrote:Around 2499 now then.Mick Norris wrote:Dan beat Conor O'Donnell (2389) in round 3 and plays Gavin Wall (2329) in round 4LawrenceCooper wrote:

Re: 2nd GM norm for Daniel Fernandez
A few months back, there was a thread about the Whitley quadrangular from about 1997. The American Daniel Fernandez played for the USA in that event.
